I like the My First Russian Book, Second, Third and Fourth by Arakin and Samoylova. They are dated now with communist propaganda but the method was excellent. They came with long-play records.

I don't know if they are still available but they were produced for high school students.

That was how I was introduced to the Russian language. They introduced the letters a few at a time and had you speaking simple Russian right from the start.

I also liked that series, except for the fact that stress wasn't marked in the body of the book, only in the vocabularies. But, let's face it, the texts were rather boring, in the first 2 books at least. We put up with uninteresting material then, because there wasn't much else around. And we'd been brainwashed into thinking that grammar and drills were more important than content.
On the plus side: the outlay of the books was very good indeed, nice drawings, some interesting information about things Russian, shortish drills not too tedious and pages not too cluttered so one didn't feel suffocated by just looking at them. As happened with other books for learning Russian.
But having to wait till 4th year to read a potted version of Gaidar's 'Tibur and his gang' spread out over 4 lessons, for 16/17 year old pupils? If I tried to use texts like those with my 4th year 10th graders they'd lynch me.
