What do you think of having an online book club here in the How-to-learn-any-language forum? I'm thinking of doing one or two books per month. The original language of the chosen books would be different all the time, so that we have a good reason to practise our languages in reading, but people would of course be free to read the books in translation. Two books would have the advantage that people could choose a language... Discussion of the books should also be in several languages, so I guess the best room, if this project takes off, would be the Multilingual Lounge.

Who would participate?

===== UPDATE =====

Book clubs are open now. Anybody may join.

1st month (February):
French: Les trois mousquetaires by Alexandre Dumas père. Book club meets here.
English: Ben Hur by Lewis Wallace. Book club meets here.
German: Effi Briest by Theodor Fontane. Book club meets here.

2nd month (March):
French: Ombre sultane by Assia Djebar, a francophone Algerian writer. This is available as a mass-market paperback for 5.50 EUR or less at European branches of Amazon or possibly even your local bookstore or library. Book club meets here.
English: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald online text, mass-market paperbacks are available too. Book club meets here.
German: Der Vorleser by Bernhard Schlink (= The Reader). The only German book to make it to #1 of the New York Times bestseller list, and they recently turned it into a movie, so that's a good reason to read it now. Book club meets here.
Non-fiction: The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. Book club meets here.

3rd month (April)
Dutch: "Max Havelaar" by Multatuli. Very available online: Dutch text, Dutch audiobook and English text
English: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. A modern classic that is often treated in American schools, but little known outside the states. Not legally available online.
French: Segou - Les murailles de la terre by Maryse Condé. A historical novel situated at the time of the Bambara Empire. Not legally available online.
German: Die Verwandlung (The Metamorphosis) by Franz Kafka. Online you can find both the German text and the same as an audiobook, as well as a English translation and a Spanish translation.
Italian: "Il postino de Pablo Neruda" by Antonio Skármeta. Has been turned into the movie "Il postino - The postman". Not legally available online.
Spanish: "Sangre y Arena" by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez? (Book Online | Wiki Page)
Non-fiction: ??

4th month (May)
German: "Der Tod in Venedig" by Thomas Mann.

Suggestions for other languages and for future months are still welcome.

I want to participate too. I suggest we should have more choice (4-5 books)

I'd decide in an ad-hoc way, depending on how busy I am and what the books are.

As others have said, it's a good idea.

Good idea and worth trying.

Same as Volte, my participation would depend on what books we'd be discussing and how much time I can spare.
