I'm not much of a reader myself, but some respected Finnish authors that could be recommended are Eino Leino (he wrote mostly poetry), Pentti Saarikoski, Paavo Rintala, Volter Kilpi, Veijo Meri, Jari Tervo, Leena Lander, Paavo Haavikko, Lauri Viita, Hannu Salama and Kari Hotakainen. Reijo Mäki writes detective stories and Ilkka Remes highly popular entertainment. Then there's Kalevala, the national epic.
Aki Kaurismäki's Mies vailla menneisyyttä from 2002 is the only Finnish movie that has ever been nominated for foreign language Oscar, but my favourite Finnish film is Paha maa from 2005, a film that wonderfully presents all the clichés about the Finns as pathetic, desperate, violent drunks. That's a funny film and a good introduction to the country for every foreigner. But seriously, 2-3 alright movies are made every year and it's pretty easy to find the good ones. I've yet to check out Sauna from last year which is supposed to be an okay horror movie. The big problem with Finnish movie "industry" isn't with the directors or actors, as there are perfectly good enough directors and actors out there, but it's with the scripts... the country is desperately missing good screenwriters; no-one seems to have even decent ideas for films, let alone would be able to write fantastic dialogue. But thankfully there is better literature in the country, and much better music; otherwise the culture of this country would be pretty dry. 1 person has voted this message useful |
