For people wanting Swedish books, an author I have read a few works by is Henning Mankell. He writes crime fiction and generally they are quite entertaining - I have only read these in English, however the originals are in Swedish and I would assume better than the translations.

You seem to know what you're talking about. To anyone else with these interests, let me add that Sweden (together with Britain) probably has the most best traditions when it comes to crime fiction: Sjöwall % Wählöö. They have been translted into many languages, the films are excellent etc., and I'd guess that they're not too difficult for foreigners to read/understand.

I have a penpal from Germany who studies Swedish and has chosen to read one of the Sjöwall/Wahlöö works (in Swedish of course). Three of the books have been filmed with international actors.

I am just curious... With Swedish "international" actors (e.g Peter Haber and Mikael Persbrandt) or with foreign actors? I've only watched those with Peter Haber, plus I think that Rolf Lassegård also played Beck in the mid-1990s.

If I remember correctly Rolf Lassgård played Wallander in (most of) the movies based on Henning Mankell's books. Before Peter Haber I think Gösta Ekman made most of the Beck movies.
I would also recommend Henning Mankell's books. I think they are quite entertaining and definitely well written regarding the language. His crime fiction books are easy to follow and build up the tension quite well. I would just like to mention his book Djup as well, which isn't about Wallander but a great read in my opinion. He really manage to use the language to create a very strange atmosphere in that book. Maybe not as easy to read for someone studying Swedish as those about Wallander.

Believe it or not: Walther Matthau, Derek Jacobi and Jan Decleir (I think he's a Dutch actor). Rolf Lassgård played Gunvald Larsson, Beck's assistant.

Jan Decleir is a Belgian actor, and a very good one too!

Ah, I was fooled by the title "Beck - De gesloten kamer" (Dutch, right?).
