Yes, I have a few dual-language books with both the original German text and an English translation. They are helpful, but unfortunately, they are not always very interesting! I want to try to read something without any translation, at first, to see how well I can do it. This is the next step in my ongoing comprehension project--time to test myself! But I do agree with you that it's good to start out with the translation available, and I still use the dual-language books every day.
If you know of any, I'd also like to find some of those. The selection of dual-language texts I have so far is very limited. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Thanks zenmonkey, I think that a German/Spanish dual text would be very challenging but a great learning resource. I can't manage a German/French text at this time, but I plan to fix that problem. I didn't actually mean a dual-language text, I don't go in for them myself. What I had in mind was just any kind of book that was first written in a language other than German. Translations tend to be slightly easier to read, while still being written for native speakers and fully idiomatic, just without the extras. For example, I read Agatha Christie and August Strindberg after a few months in Russia, and understood between 25% and 50%. If I were Russian and tried to read Strindberg in Swedish I would probably get much less at that early stage. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Oh, I understand what you meant now, Gusutafu, sorry if I got that a bit wrong. I agree, translations are worth considering, too. I actually have one of those, a German novel translated from English, somewhere, and I confess that I stole it from a Leipzig hotel room. I had thought of getting a copy of the English original and reading both, and I see how that could be helpful. But in this case, I lost the book!
