I don't like literature very much, so I am as a reader specialized on non-fiction. 95 % of all the books I have at home are non-fiction. As I don't have access to paypal and therefore cannot order foreign language books from the internet, I have only very limited possibilities to buy non-fictional books in my foreign languages. The last foreign language non-fictional book I bought in the Netherlands was "Geïllustreede Fossielen Encyclopedie", which allows me now to look everything up on paleontology. The wholesalers of my German book shop don't offer foreign non-fictional books. Via "De Koepel" in the Netherlands, who doesn't ask for credit cards, but send normal invoices, I can order astronomy books in Dutch and English, this works very well. My favourite so far is "Bang! The complete history of the Universe". And my Esperanto non-fictional books I can order online via UEA in Rotterdam, but they don't have much on natural sciences.
Non-fiction in Dutch and English I read as fluently as German. I have no possiblitiy to buy non-fictional books in French / Italian / Spanish, so I cannot comment on my reading abilty on those languages. Reading scientifc magazines in French goes well, but less fluently than in Dutch and English. In Esperanto I generally don't read very much. I think it is a shame that you should restrict yourself in this manner. Ordering books over the internet is very easy and relatively secure. I've only acquired a small fraction of my library locally; most of it I've ordered online, and out of hundreds of packages only two or three have gone missing, receiving in each case a full refund. Sometimes I even find it more economical to order books originally printed in my country from Amazon, even after shipping from the U.S. to Colombia is factored in. I think you would enjoy your languages so much more if you learned and accustomed yourself to ordering books over the internet. No, these internet sites ask for payment by credit cards and I don't have any credit card and - even worse - I will never get one in my life. You might be able to get bookstores to order books for you from abroad, using their own credit cards or suppliers. I've had bookstores offer to take care of it for me a few times, but I prefer to just order them myself directly. But it's worth trying if there are things you're interested in getting, that you won't be able to get a hold of without a credit card of your own. If you do research online to find books in other languages you want, you can always give the ISBN number to a local
bookshop to see if they can get it in for you. Advantages include free shipping and cash purchasing. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yes, I will try it out with non-fictional books, but I can hardly imagine that they are able to order astronomy books (to give an example) from Italy, Spain and France, if they can't work together with their own wholesaler. If you don't wish to have a credit card, you could use the services of a local store or company that allows you to place orders in their name in whichever online store you choose and handle payment and shipping for you.
