Olá, Luso. Obrigada pelo conselho quanto ao TOEFL e boa sorte com seus estudos também. :)

It seems I have a bit of a backlog over here. Maybe I should follow my log too. :P

@ BAnna: Thanks for the wishes.

@ Johanna: Thanks, but I guess the Super Challenge would be a bit too much at the moment. I have seriously considered it (Kerrie's enthusiasm also helped) but it's not possible now. Good luck to you, anyway.
Regarding Italian: it's just like the other Romance languages (as expected). Of course, there's the problem of false friends. Especially the use of prepositions. Many are similar to Portuguese but, as with French (and also Spanish) some are different.
There's one easy thing: like French, English or German, the Italian language tends to use the "auxiliary + participle" formula to say things in the past. I guess Portuguese is harder there (you have to conjugate everything).

@ Isabelle: De nada. Se entretanto precisar de mais alguma coisa, é só pedir. E obrigado pelos votos de sucesso.

Now, for a small but important log entry:

German:
My mind is made up: ceteris paribus, I'll be taking the C1 test in June. I know it's a difficult one, but with proper planning it's feasible.

Of course it is! Once you're confident enough to take the exam, most of the way is paved, unless something unexpected obliges you to take a long break. Planning is important, but I'm sure you know more about that than me, so it's left just to wish you luck.

It seems I'm back to my regular log posting rhythm: not a lot.

On the other hand, I manage to lend a helping hand here and there, whenever I think I can.

This post is not without content, though:

Italian:
Right now, I'm studying for my B2 test. There'll be an oral part on January 31st, and a written one on February 5th. I call it a test rather than an exam because there's no diploma involved. It's just to make sure you can proceed to the next level. But it's nonetheless rather formal.

@ Dagane: Yes, the planning. I see formal exams as a game: since they have a fixed structure, by knowing the rules you're half way there. This approach has served me well, and not only for language-related exams.

Although the rest of your possible wanderlust languages are also great, I vote for Persian! You could see it as your duty as a member of the middle-eastern team ;)

Final note: I notice there must be a lot of like-minded persons in this forum. Mention Spanish, French or German, and you're just one more in the crowd (not that's anything wrong with it - it's a nice crowd). Whisper "Tibetan" or "Sanskrit" and your popularity soars sky-high. :)

So true! Maybe people like to read logs about lesser studied languages, like me. Living one's wanderlust vicariously or something like that. Or maybe it's the sheer romanticism of it - like watching a rom-com where the popular guy falls in love with the misunderstood, unpopular girl who usually doesn't get noticed but is actually really, really cool :D

Viel Erfolg bei der Deutschprüfung C1!

Vielen Dank, aber es ist noch nicht festgestellt.

It dawned on me that my official student levels are:
German: C2 (this is overrated)
Arabic: C1 (this is so overrated)
Italian: C1, a week or so from today (I'm sure I nailed the B2 test)

Real or not, this scenario poses some problems (hear this, oh enthusiastic newbies):
- progress seems slower
- amount of time invested is greater
- you have to write a lot more
- you don't say the first thing that springs to mind (you're "advanced", after all)
- exams become really unforgiving
- sometimes, you get the feel you'll never upgrade from "learns" to "speaks"

On the other hand:
- you really start to ponder reading the original version of Buddenbrooks;
- Umberto Eco stays challenging, but now it's the original;
- you get to read (with help) a very short tale from 1,001 Nights in Arabic.
