Anything by R.W. Fassbinder. For example:
Lola
Die Sehnsucht der Veronika Voss
Die Ehe der Maria Braun
Some of Volker von Schloendorff's movies are also great. Including:
Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum
Die Blechtrommel

I totally agree with "Im Juli" (very relaxed, about a journey, literal and metaphorical, with a very good sense of humor) and I'd like to add "Sommersturm" - it's actually about teens and homosexuality, but it's also very nice and funny.

Stalingrad and Das Boot are both amazing films. Of course I am biased and I love everything to do with WWII.

I liked "Im Juli" very much!
A funny film with some use of slang is "Die Schule" (only if you're not extremely allergic to American teen movies; it's much better but still this kind of humor).
"Die Fälscher" don't need any recommendation, I guess. I saw it before the Oscar nomination ;).

"Kanllhart" - it's a movie about a 15-year-old boy who has to move with his mother from a rich neighbourhood of Berlin (zehlendorf) to a poor one (Neukölln) and is forced to experience the difficulties of living in such an area.

Nobody has mentioned "Kebab Connection" or "Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot" yet. Both funny movies.

Kebab Connection is total crap, sorry, but I get mad whenever I even see it. I don't like Knallhart either. Sorry, I am a boy living in northern Neukolln, just on the border to Kreuzberg, and I don't like the way "my hood" is depicted, I don't think it's realistic. Turkisch fur Anfanger is good for your German, and it's funny, but works with a lot of clichees (not really my thing), and Gegen die Wand...let's not talk about it :)
I liked "Das Jesus Video" a lot, and "Das Experiment" and "Anatomie" were good too (Anatomie not as good es Das Experiment though).
Regards,
Ilhan

Das Experiment and Der Untergang were awesome! Zwartboek (in Dutch) was good too, and it has a lot of German dialogue since it takes place in WWII in the Netherlands... all the German officers and soldiers speak pretty clear German.
