I really have no idea what is easy and what is difficult in Russian, but maybe short stories of Anton Chekhov would be rather easy. Maybe you can try Nikolai Gogol's short stories or "Geroi nashego vremeni"(Hero of our times) of Mikhail Lermontov. Tolstoi should be more difficult, and Dostoievski even more so. As I have read nothing of Russian modern contemporary fiction authors, I cannot really say anything about that. I read lots of modern books in Russian but those are for the most part books of arabistics, sinology, indology, oriental philosophy - non-fiction books.

During my Russian studies we read short stories of Chekhov and some Charms. Perhaps also Gogol. None of had previous knowledge of Russian so I assume the texts were easy enough.

I am going to start a new topic on that, since this thread is probably more on sharing tips how to look for foreign language books in general.

It turns out that the fabulous Spanish web site www.cervantesvirtual.com has digitized copies of Hispania from about 1990 to 1995. The book review section there may be useful for finding reading materials in Spanish and Portuguese, and those into grammar and/or language teaching may enjoy the rest of the sections as well.
