I found this Japanese Audio Book Library
by Hideo Ikeda who is an announcer.
He says the literary works are in the public domain
however the text is not available at the website.
I suppose I should be able to find the books at a
used book store. If not, then I could surely find
them at a library.
Well, now I've got some audio at least. I think at
some point, I should send him an email to thank the
guy and encourage him to record more.

Keith,
There is something wrong with the link in the above post. The link as posted doesn't work for me. I was able to get the link from the page source so I hope you won't mind if I post it here:

I'm not learning Japanese right now, but I did go ahead and download the audio from your link for future use. Thanks.

I found the text of the audio books.
There is a "link" page on the website to a library of Japanese books on the internet.
I will post the links to the text of the audio books.
1. 鼻
2. 桜の樹の下には
3. 山月記
4. 名人伝
5. よだかの星

On Japanese or in Japanese? I'm more interested in finding the latter — audiobooks are so rare in Japan.
