Back to the original topic....

"Two of the greatest authors the world has ever known. Has anyone ever tried to read in Russian any of their masterpieces? "

I read Anna Karenina in Russian and really enjoyed it. Since I'm not completely fluent in Russian, I read it alongside an English translation. I'm doing the same thing with War and Peace now. I'll read the Russian out loud, and catch 80% of what is going on. Then I skim read the English to make sure I don't miss anything. Sometimes I'll reverse the order so that I know what the chapter is about first.

One thing I really liked about doing this with Anna Karenina, was that the chapters were really short. I haven't tried some of the other Russian authors, but I can definitely recommend Tolstoy.

Have you come across this site?   http://ilibrary.ru/ It has Tolstoy and other Russian author classics.

For one chapter of 'War and Peace', I used that site to get all the words for the chapter. I then put the words into a spreadsheet and sorted them. Then picked out all the words I didn't know. Then put them through a translator and then into Mnemosyne, where I studied them until I knew them. Was able to understand a lot more of that chapter, but was way too much work.

I really should just pony up the $15 or $25 and get a fully functioning copy of gtrans. Gtrans is shareware that uses the google translate engine and when you copy text into the clipboard it automatically translates the text.

That way I could read 'War and Peace' online, and then when I come across a word I don't know, just high-light and ctrl-c.

Jim
