Nearly forgot Milan Kundera: not half as good in French as he is in Czech,

In German, Kafka is my favourite, for example 'Der Prozess' and 'Die Verwandlung'. Hermann Hesse 'Der Steppenwolf' is one of my favourite books and he's written many other good books.

I'm enjoying Kafka. Currently got myself an audiobook of "Die Verwandlung" from the Hörgut Klassik catalogue, along with Eichendorff's "Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts". Kafka does create some awesomely monstrous sentences, though, haha.

By the languages I speak, my favourites tend to be:

Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian
Andrić, I. - Na Drini ćuprija (though basically anything by him is a good choice)
Gundulić, I. - Suze sina razmetnoga and Osman (epic works, beautiful)
Krleža, M. - Povratak Filipa Latinovicza
Miljković, B. - poetry
Petković DIS, V. - poetry (Utopljene duše)
Selimović, M. - Derviš i smrt (one of my favourite literary works)

Russian
Достоевский, Ф.М. - Двойник, Преступление и наказание, Братья Карамазовы (though virtually anything by him is a good choice)
Лермонтов, М.Ю. - Герой нашего времени, poetry
Пастернак, Б.Л. - Доктор Живаго, poetry
Пушкин, A.C. - Евгений Онегин, poetry
Тютчев, Ф.И.- poetry

Italian
Alighieri, D. - La Divina Commedia (my personal favourite is Paradiso)
Bettiza, E. - Il fantasma di Trieste
Calvino, I. - Se una notte d'inverno un viaggiatore
Goldoni, C. - plays
Leopardi, G. - poetry
Petrarca, F. - Canzoniere
Pirandello, L. - Il fu Mattia Pascal, Uno, nessuno e centomila

English
Byron, G.G. - Childe Harold
Dickens, Ch. - The Old Curiosity Shop
Milton, J. - Paradise Lost
poetry of the Romanticism
Shakespeare, W. - Hamlet, Venus and Adonis, Macbeth

French
Baudelaire, Ch. - Les Fleurs du Mal
Maupassant, G. de - short stories
Montaigne - essays
Rimbaud & Verlaine
poetry of the Romanticism (Lamartine esp.)
Yourcenar, M. - Mémoires d'Hadrien

Classical literature in Latin and Greek
Homer - Odyssey
Aeshyles, Sophocles, Euripides - plays, anything by any of them (Prometheus Bound and Electra being my personal favourites)
Ovid - Metamorphoses

There are certainly more, but these are just the first ones amongst my favourites I could think of, excluded works written in languages which I do not speak.

Apart from what's been already recommended, Gogol and Chekhov are great, anything by them. As for poetry, I like Esenin, Cvetaeva, Akhmatova, Blok, Mayakovskiy, Fet, Zhukovskiy.
