things I'm looking for at this point: -a native speaker of levantine dialect, maybe a YT vlogger must have audio and visuals -a book with arab sentences with English translations with the arabic words in script not in transliteration hi everyone! I was looking online for a good language learning community, and this was one of the first google results. It looks like there are a lot of people here, and I hope to learn a lot from reading your logs and hopefully you can answer my questions too. I am trying to study Arabic right now. I would like to learn MSA for written and Levantine as the dialect (since that's the one my school teaches). I am a complete beginner, so I do not too much about the language yet. I'm also interested in learning Arabic. I have a copy of Mastering Arabic The publisher has a lot of resources at this site: Palgrave Macmillan There is a great YouTube channel by Maha Yakoub. Learn Arabic with Maha And there is an Arabic Study Group at Arabic Study Group that I'm going to join. I hope to start studying in a week or so. Keep in touch. My first goal in Arabic is to learn the script and read and write the letters. Since arabic has such a different script, I am trying to learn the letters right now with learnarabic with maha. It is hard adjusting my brain to writing right to left. Pengin, a good thing to use at the beginning is Yamli http://www.yamli.com/arabic-keyboard/ but it requires you to know the informal romanization known as Arabizi or Arabic chat alphabet.
Recently a dictionary powered by Yamli started up: http://fuzzyarabic.herokuapp.com/ But still the best free online dictionary is Aratools http://www.aratools.com/#text-dict-tab As for learning to type, the best way is to switch your keyboard to Arabic :) Also, make sure you don't have Word 2003, the Arabic font there is buggy (you can't change the font size). I use Open Office for my notes. As for writing, the only way is to practice and practice. I learned to write by writing some personal names I'd already known over and over. Just make sure you don't repeat my mistake - don't pick Aisha by any means. I know it's popular and I had a friend so named, but writing it as a beginner is a pain! Try Mustafa or Khalid, for example. EDIT: You could also head over to Team Rare's team thread or try to find Luso's log. He's much further along than either of us. thank you zirael for your advice especially the new resources; i will try to find luso's log right now! yes, i have come to the same conclusion myself on writing. now that i know the alphabet and the pronunciation and its script, i am not sure what to do next. Proceeding with Arabic is really tricky. It's like learning two different languages in one... I feel like reading/writing are one thing and speaking will be another I am in search for a good grammar book that is really comprehensive with example sentences and english translations. 1 person has voted this message useful |
