Rolled off my project and am trying to get back into a routine. I pretty much feel dead to the world, am soooo tired. Falling behind again in my SRS reviews. Am trying to rachette back up the amount of mimic'ing (echoing) that I do. Some friends, from one of my Mandarin speaking small groups, are trying to wrangle me in now that they know I have some free time again. Had to swap out one of the movies that I've been concentrating on, as that one was no longer fun for whatever reason.
Update; Being the end of Aug, am trying to decide whether to sign up for another class at the local Chinese school. The class was a supplement to my studies. That particular class was discontinued. They now have a beginning Chinese for business class, with a different instructor. Another option is to take something different, like tàijíquán (太极拳/太極拳) where the class would be conducted predominantly in Mandarin. Some phrases that I'm echoing, from my movies;
zi3 na3 yidian3dian3 yue4liang hai2 mei yuan2. ni3 gan4ma2 zen3me jiao3 wo3 qi3chuang2? ni3 kan4 duo1 hai2 zai4 zhe4li, suo3yi yan2ge2 lai2 shuo1 wo3 hai2 mei2tou1. yi1ge li3bai4 hou4 da4jia1 hai2shi4 hao3 xiong1di4, hao3 peng2you2, dui4 ba. ting1zhe, ru2guo wo3de jia1ren2 yu4dao4 ren2he2 wei1xian3, ni3 jiu4 bi4xu1 gei3 wo3 fùzé dao4di And sometimes I will substitute portions; suo3yi yan2ge2 lai2 shuo1 wo3 hai2 mei2tou1. suo3yi yan2ge2 lai2 shuo1 na4 bushi4 ta1de. suo3yi yan2ge2 lai2 shuo1 ta1 mei2zuo4 de. Update; I love this one; 在多,永远补遣多 zai4 duō yong3yuan3 bu3qian3 duō In the movie this refers to potato chips, as in the jingle...can't stop eating them. I watched an animated movie last night....haven't seen this one in a while, nor have I been listening to it. I did not understand everything which is pretty normal right now. About half way through, realized that I was not translating into English! My biggest change lately has been echo'ing phrases from movies. Most free moments are spent echo'ing, while driving, riding alone in an elevator, running around the house, etc. These days I also wake up repeating Mandarin phrases in my head. So I'm pretty motivated at the moment!

Made it tonight to one of my Mandarin small groups....haven't been to one since the spring. Several people commented that my Mandarin has improved. I've decided to not take a class and instead attend a small group meeting each Sat. I think hearing different live voices is more important right now.

Doing my periodic bang head here. I should be in a good mood about thinking in Mandarin now. Then I looked at the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) language proficiency scale, formerly known as the FSI scale. The criteria reminded me of the steepness of this climb...had to remind myself of where I was one year ago. Had to remind myself that what matters is what I do next.
Had someone tell me this weekend how great and wonderful XYZ language learning program is and that I should be using it. In this case the person was extolling the virtues of Rosetta Stone. Normally this sort of conversation doesn't bother me, but for some reason this is sticking. That may be since this person is married to a native Mandarin speaker.....not that he himself speaks Mandarin of course. I don’t hear those sorts of things, probably because I am ethnic Chinese. I happen to be an American born Chinese. Once in a while people will make comments about how did I manage to grow up without learning the language, or if I didn’t learn it when I should have.... Incidentally, my parents came from Guangdong and don’t speak Mandarin. They generally understand it though I haven’t figured out to what extent.
