I just came back from a short vacation and wanted to go back to tackling the subtitles from "The Fellowship of the Ring". Lo and behold, Nciku has changed the functionality on their site. I heavily depended on Nciku to hand write the characters (using a Wacom tablet) correctly break it into individual words, show their definitions and the pinyin. Now it appears that Nciku no longer handles complete sentences. This is going to put a huge crimp into transcribing things. :>(

Since I have more difficulty speaking face to face with people, thought it was worth experimenting a little..... bought a magazine that has a lot of large full face photos with "eyes looking directly at me". In this case it's a hair style magazine. I'm doing echoing while concentrating on the eyes... definitely a little bit harder.

Sentence mode is back on the Nciku site! Of course I had written a complaint, don't know if that helped.
Had my second session with the tutor. We really are just chatting. Her 儿s are starting to come out. She is also correcting Taiwanese terms, which I didn't realize were Taiwanese. While it's fustrating how poorly I think on my feet and how much more vocabulary is needed (lots) all this face to face practice is definitely helping. This weekends' activities, with Mandarin speaking groups, includes a Labor Day picnic. I was waffling about going as it's geared toward families... feel like the odd wheel out. But I need to maximize exposure and they do welcome me so off I will go. It was interesting reading the picnic info; on one document, BBQ grill was translated as BBQ furnace. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Was talking to someone today whom I'm guessing has a Mandarin dialect as his native tongue; His wife corrected his pronunciation for the measure that he used for corn on the cob, zhi1. She said ke1 could also be used. Anyhow, he asked me to write my name and was surprized that my characters look half past decent. That's from all the recent transcription work. On that note, given the difficulty of the vocabulary in "The Fellowship of the Rings", I switched to something easier for the time being, "Monsters, Inc". I have a Taiwan marketed copy so the subtitles use traditional characters. Thankfully Nciku can usually handle that. In the past when Nciku didn't recognize a traditional character I would temporarily switch to YellowBridge. Anyhow, working with both simplified and traditional at the same time is not what I consider to be ideal but given that locally both are used, it's practical.
Update; Also talked to someone who has been here over 5 years, probably 10 (I've forgotten). This person is originally from Shandong. In response to my fustration about my slow progress, she said that she still thinks in Chinese. So she has to mentally translate back and forth between English and Chinese. I was a little surprized. Bang head here...not one of my better days. Listened to someone go over some history which included names such as Maccabee, Pompey and Octavian. The Powerpoint included some of the English names, which is the main reason I knew. And when should I expect to hear these names in Mandarin again?! Also fustrated with transcribing in traditional characters, would rather it be in simplified. The only movie I have with simplified subtitles matching the dialog that I like well enough to weather the long term is "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. The thing is often the vocabulary is so beyond me that memorizing the dialog becomes akin to memorizing sounds.
It's Mid-Autumn Festival and so mooncake time. I'm used to Cantonese mooncakes. The local Chinese school was selling about 5 different types but none of those were Cantonese. Someone from one of my small groups helped me to buy some and then we traded so I could have two different types (red bean paste and white lotus seed).
