I like your methodical style, nice charts too. At this rate you'll reach 1000 before you
know it.

Watched 20 minutes of Italian news with extremely low comprehension. Oh well! Will finish
working through Assimil as my crutch for my listening abilities.

Finished reading all of the free material available for The Linguist (1/3 of the book)
in Italian. By the end my reading speed was a lot faster and I didn't have to spend as
much time looking up words.
In other news, I've stopped using Anki. I don't know exactly why, but I suspect that I
can learn words without it. I find it useful for the first ~2,000 but now it is
becoming a chore - so I've abandoned it. For now. I now consider different texts as
individual "ankis" in their own right which can be re-read to test the words. So the
500-600 new words I learnt from the Linguist can be tested simply by reading the text
again (this time much more quickly). This also has the added advantage of seeing the
words in context and reinforcing grammatical structures. This revelation has come from
the fact that I've spent a good deal of time using Anki and not as much to show for it
as I would have liked.

I'm experimenting with the usefulness of Anki... so here is what I've done. I just
finished reading the second chapter of Harry Potter and found that the percentage of
unknown words was 6.04%. I'll compare this number with later chapters to see if my
passive vocab is improving without using up valuable time using Anki. I of course suspect
that it will and this will convince me to do more reading as opposed to my regular 20-30
minutes a day of Anki.

Hello Oasis,
I should tell you that your log was one of the inspirations of my log for 10 languages 2000 hours. And indeed you are now time-wise at where I set my goal for all of my languages, that is 200 hours each. In your last post you said that you had only 6% missed words in Harry Potter book which is quite impressive I guess. I have a few questions.
Do you have an idea of how many words do you have in your vocabulary?
How much of the grammar could you cover in these 200 hours?
and how is your fluency right now in Italian?
Did you get exposed to Italian a lot while you were studying or did you just go by the listening materials?
Good luck with the remaining 800 hours :)

Thanks for the kind words Hakan. I'm glad my humble efforts have managed to inspire
someone. In turn, you've now helped to motivate me. I'll be happy to answer your
questions.

I would say that my active vocabulary would be somewhere in the range of 2,000-4,000
words. Keep in mind that "activating" words was not my main objective throughout the
first 200 hours. Having read your log it seems that you are more about speaking fluency
so you should be able to exceed this number if that was your focus - depending of
course on the kind of language you are learning relative to your nature language. My
Anki deck has just over 2,000 but I haven't been using that lately.

Quite a lot really. Within my first 200 hours I worked through a grammar book where I
was able to get a grasp on all the tenses and some of the more subtler aspects of
Italian grammar. I can't see why anyone wouldn't be able to do the same in any
language. My goal was to be able to recognise the main grammar points to start reading
L2 as quickly as possible.

I'll take your meaning of fluency as speaking and writing. In terms of these I'd rate
myself very low. Although I must reiterate that being able to speak and write at this
early stage is not my goal. I'll begin to work on these a little later, but for now I'm
really only trying to absorb as much comprehensible input as I can. I figure that after
200 hours anyone could be described as mildly fluent in terms of writing and speaking
but only with a rather small and refined vocabulary. So I guess it's a bit of a trade
off depending on how exactly you want to spend your 200 hours. I've still got 800 more
to work on all the rest of this.

A page or 2 ago I described in full which materials I used. Most of it has been working
through my grammar book and listening to Assimil recordings. At the moment I've found
myself spending a lot more time reading.

Just finished chapter 3 of Harry Potter with 7.19% unknown words (chapter 2 was 6.04%).
It would be interesting to see how this number behaves over time.

I have a love hate relationship with Anki. I put in a small session today after having it
on hiatus.
