Summary from July 10th to 24th:
Flashcards: 60 minutes (1 hour) L-R (L2-L2): 30 minutes. News and other broadcasts: 182 minutes (3 hours, 2 minutes) 5 Films; 546 minutes (9 hours, 6 minutes). The films were: Frozen Planet/ Planète gélée (counted as 2 films) Incendies Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy/ La Taupe Headwinds/ Des vents contraires All viewed with the French soundtrack, and French captions. I was surprised to recognize Charles Tisseyre's voice on Frozen Planet, and upon investigation realized it was because the series had been co-produced with Découverte Canada. An interesting note for Tinker Tailor... The French version doesn't use "tinker, tailor, soldier, spy" in either the title or the film itself, I assume because the rhyme won't be familiar to French-speaking audiences. Instead, Control uses chess names to represent the characters, e.g. "la Tour", "le Fou", "le Pion", etc... Edited to ask/note: For "la Tour", "le Fou", I made the names themselves upper-case, as I would have "Rook" and "Bishop" in English (as they're, in this context, used as proper nouns). Or should it be "La tour", or "La Tour"..? What is the French convention re upper/lower cases for articles and proper nouns? Among other things, a non-language project took over much of my time, and I had to drop out of the 6WC after
a promising start. But here's a summary of French done since my last post of 24 July: -Flashcards: 167 minutes -Films : 5 films: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Les femmes du 6ème étage. The Proposal (2009 film w. Sandra Bullock. Not v. good.) The King's Speech (excellent dubbing work) Le gamin au vélo . (by the Dardennes brothers. Definitely plan to watch more of their films.) News: 10 mins LR: 60 minutes. La Guingette Books: 125 pages. Marek Halter, Le kabbaliste de Prague; C.S. Lewis, Le Lion, La Sorciere Blanche Et L'Armoire Magique; Hergé, Coke en stock. Summary: 1 book of 53 pages (did a word count in Word, page count adjusted from down from 96).
Finally (!) read The Little Prince / Le petit prince. This seems to be something that most people studying French either have to, or do read fairly early on, but I'd somehow previously managed to avoid this French- learning rite of passage. I'll update the page count when I get home from vacation, having used the very useful online version (with interlaced English translations) on Ilya Frank's website. Summary:
2 Films: After the Wedding by Susanne Bier, and Un conte de Noël by Arnaud Desplechin. I started to rewatch Desplechin's film to check on the subtitles for EMK's "French DVDs with exact subtitles" thread, and ended up watching the whole film again. As ever, well worth it. Reading: 46 pages, mainly from C.S. Lewis' L'armoire magique. News: 193 minutes (3 hours, 13 minutes), from RFI and France24, of which see note below. -------- I had a "duh" moment recently, when I made the serendipitous discovery that France24 has parallel French and English versions for many of its video broadcasts! I'd of course seen the little links on the top right of each Fr24 page, for English, Français, and [Arabic], but somehow thought that the English versions were just textual translations. But no - there are actual broadcasts in English too! I started by watching one story (on the rise of drug addiction in the Punjab, including among the middle class) in French; then upon listening to the English version realized how much I'd missed (either misunderstood or just not caught) in the original; and then re- watched/listened to the French again, picking up a lot more this third time round. Not all of the stories are in bilingual (or trilingual?) versions, of course, but the "Reportages" section of the site is a good place to start: http://www.france24.com/fr/reporters. Making a language selection brings you back to the main page, so you'll then have to click on the corresponding tab on top for your category (in this case also "reportages"). Euronews also has multilingual versions of their stories (with the added bonus of ten other languages to choose from), but I find them a tad short for my taste. Summary:
Books. Finished 1 book: the last 24 pages of C.S. Lewis. L'armoir magique, in the Narnia series. Assimil. 40 minutes. News. 94 minutes, a mix of Radio-Canada, France 24, RFI. Podcasts. 20 minutes from Luca's videos. Films. 1 film. I Love You, Man / J't'aime, mon homme!. Not my usual fare, but it was on the library cart, and I noticed it had a French soundtrack and captions. It does improve after Jason Segel's character meets Rudd's character - there's good chemistry between the two. LR. 20 minutes. Am hoping to see the new Les Miserables film (of the musical), and wanted to familiarize myself with the book a bit beforehand. Tried two audio versions, one on Librivox and read by "Didier"; another on http://www.litteratureaudio.com/livre-audio-gratuit-mp3/hugo -victor-les-miserables.html (copy and paste, removing any spaces inserted by the forum software), read by "Pomme".
