I began Assimil, Chinese With Ease the other day. I'm on lesson 4 right now. So far,
i
think this program could work. I think my pronunciation of tones might be a little bit
shaky at times, but I think I am honing in on the sound of the speakers in the lessons.
I'll just update this page with any milestones or anything I think is worthy.
My goal - To pass the HSK Advanced test within 3 years.
My plan - Complete Assimil in 150 days. Take mandarin classes at college indefinitely.
After Assimil, supplement college course work with NCPR.
In 7 weeks, I start taking Mandarin in school. I hope Assimil's passive phase gives me
a head start and is a good supplement to my classwork. I'm thankful that I will have a
teacher to talk to that can help me with pronunciation. My college uses Integrated
Chinese for its text. After Assimil, I hope to be able to use IC for school, and NCPR
for home-study.

Good luck. I received my own copy of Assimil Chinese yesterday, although I'm just curious about the language and don't have your lofty aspirations.
Good luck on reaching your goals.

Just finished lesson 11. Assimil is so much more enjoyable than FSI drills. I'm really
liking it. The strength of my process with Assimil, I believe, is that I am actually
relying on my ear to understand the dialogue and exercises, as opposed to in platiquemos
with Spanish when I would rely on the fact that I had already referred to the
transcription. Also, the target language-only audio is really sweet because it allows me
to focus on the words being spoken, and really try to understand them by ear.

Assimil is nice, an hour of study flies by like nothing.
A word of advice from my interpal language exchange buddy, utilize pinyin for
pronunciation. So, I'm using the pinyin pronunciation guide at the beginning of the book
to really double check my ear for pronunciation and tones. She said though, even with my
pronunciation, she knows exactly what I'm saying.
Just finished lesson 19.

What's weird about Assimil Chinese is every line ends with an exclamation point... I wonder why that is, do Chinese
people tend to be overly enthusiastic?

Homogenik, that may be weird, but it doesn't matter at all. I practice my Assimil with
native Mandarin speakers on Skype and I haven't had any problems so far.
Lesson 23. Assimil is great so far, I love studying and it's not a drag. Also, my
listening is improving dramatically faster than it ever did in Spanish. I can't wait for
the active phase, and to begin using Assimil Writing Chinese. I'm putting in about an
hour a day, and working on opening up my ear.

Mandarin is such a challenge for me right now. I am going to just work patiently.
