No, aspirated sounds can't come at the end of syllables in English. They only happen at
the beginning of stressed syllables, unless there is an 's' before them. So for example the 'p' in port is aspirated but the 'p' in sport is not. And a P at the end of a word (like "tap") would never be aspirated, not even a little bit. Meaning you don't even release any air at all, like you would in most other languages (at least in American English, I don't know about other dialects). Another thing: I don't remember if it was in this log or someone else's, but once I was looking for the audio for Aronson's book and I didn't find it. Well yeah but speakers of other languages might perceive it differently, I mean, maybe when rendering the sound into Georgian, it's not only aspiration / lack of aspiration that counts for deciding whether they'll use an ejective or an aspirated k. Other components of articulation might play a role as well and lead Georgian teenagers to write facebook with an aspirated k.

Yeah that's true. Maybe they are used to English words often being transcribed with
aspirated letters and don't really understand the rule, so they overuse it. But maybe there is another reason too, I'm just guessing. :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
