I'm so excited to see that much activity here and at TixhiiDon's log, also with Murdoc's assistance. That makes me want to go back to my studies immediately!

Me too! :) @Murdoc: Didi madloba! So, yesterday I discovered that the website book2 has an iPhone app (if you don't know what book2 is, check it out!). You can choose any language for the basic interface as well as the one you want to learn, so today I've been switching between Georgian- Russian and Russian-Georgian. It's perfect, since today is the day I study both those languages (I have a very specific language learning schedule ;). Also, I watched some more Nichieri. Like I said before, it's the Georgian version of _____'s Got Talent. I noticed something and I wondered if anyone could explain it to me... It's not about the language, but I'd still like to know. So, I saw a couple episodes where people would watch the acts, and then just start crying. Like most people in the audience (well, at least the women), the judges, the people watching backstage, etc. The first time I saw it I thought, ok, they're just singing a sad song or something... But then I saw another one where it was just a little kid singing something cute, and everyone started bawling their eyes out. It was so weird to me, but I guess it is just a cultural thing? Or maybe the people on this show are just very emotional...? ;P Anyway, can someone who is Georgian/has been to Georgia tell me what that is all about? It's very interesting. I'm impressed with the courage of anyone who takes on the challenge of learning Georgian. As a possible aid, or to bring learners together, I wanted to point out this (quite new) website for learners of the language:

I haven't seen much of that show but I can speculate a bit. From what I've seen people usually cry when a contestant has a sad story behind (like being an orphan kid or having poor social background or sth like that). I can imagine them crying cuz of little kid singing something cute as well. As for the reasons, I think you guessed it right, it's kinda cultural thing, people can get emotional very easily. But there are exceptions as well, for example, I think the female judge is very fake. Expugnator, Do you have a Georgian log as well? I once had one log at another forum, but I got stuck due to lack of resources and because I didn't have anyone to ask about doubts. I'm not learning Georgian actively yet, so I prefer to just ask questions here or at Tixhiidon's logs which can prove usefulfor the others. @daristani: Wow! Thank you! I can't believe something like that exists, that's so cool.
@Murdoc: Thanks for your insight. I know I am missing a lot because I cannot understand what they are saying. For example, this same thing happened to me once when I was watching a Turkish show. Everyone was crying their eyes out, and I thought it was crazy, but then someone explained it and it turns out it was because the girl singing hadn't seen her mom for many years and then her mom came out to be reunited with her... So I try not to make any judgments when I can't understand xD. And by the way, there have been two female judges, Sopo Nizharadze and some other girl... Maia or something like that. I think they were on different seasons though. @Expungnator: I look forward to reading your log if you ever do make one! :) So, today all I've done is book2, but this time in Georgian/Hebrew. I am going to do more, but for some reason I feel like updating now. I am going to review what I read in Aronson, and maybe some more. Also, I will work on chapters 6 and 7 in Beginner's Georgian. Also, I feel like from now on, I should record something I learned in each update, instead of just saying what I did. Of course, I will keep recording what I studied each day, for future reference, but I think that writing something I learned will encourage me to learn something specific each time I study. So... thus far all I have learned is "droebit," meaning see you soon. Ok, that's not much, I will come back later and add more! :) Update: So, like I said, I will add something I learned. I finally understand that the numbers 11-19 are formed by combining "ten" (in the form of თ), a number from 1-9, and მეტი (more). Also, I learned that the conditional is formed using the future stem and the imperfect is formed with the present stem. So that's it! So since I didn't really study today I thought I would just ask the same question I asked
in my other log. I want to find some more shows to watch in Georgian, so could anyone recommend some? So far I only know "Ra? Sad? Rodis?" and Nichieri. 1 person has voted this message useful |
