Just some quick notes:
Using DLI is going well so far for my Portuguese studies, but there are some things that bug me - and I don't mean the old spellings (although they do give me a bit of trouble. Anything that goes into Anki has to be double-checked at a dictionary or spell-checker online first. But like iguanamon said, "Free ain't easy."). First, sometimes the accents are on the wrong letter, although usually they are in the right place elsewhere in the book. That's a small problem for me, but what is a big problem is that DLI will often introduce new vocabulary without giving a definition in the word list at the end of the lesson, nor in the glossary in the back! If I'm studying on the train, I have to wait until I get in front of a computer to look up the meaning! Sometimes those words are cognates, but I am cautious about false friends. EDIT: That big problem is now a miniscule problem, because yesterday I bought an Android Sony Walkman MP3 Player. That means I can get any application that is available for Android phones and tablets. I cannot connect to the Internet outside my home, but I found some Japanese and Portuguese dictionary apps that I can use offline. Now I can look up those "mysterious" words in DLI that pop up from time to time. I also downloaded AnkiDroid, so I can do my flashcards while standing on the train, or even while at the gym! Another benefit is that I can put my PDFs, including DLI, on my MP3 player. The screen is a bit small, but still readable. That means I don't have to carry around a lot of printouts. If I can scan my heavy Japanese textbook to PDF, that would be fantastic for my back. :) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

KUJI'S WEEK IN REVIEW: 18 February - 24 February 2013
I unfortunately did not do much studying after Thursday, when I bought a new Android Walkman music player (F-series, for you techies). Since then the only studying I've done is Anki reviews, and I don't really consider that studying. But I've been testing the capabilities of my Walkman, looking for dictionary apps and other useful things to help me with my language journey. However, I think now I know what my Walkman can do (and can't do), so I hope to get back on track this week. One of the things I want to do this week, if I have time, is go through the Brazilian music information that Expugnator kindly posted on this thread and find some singers or groups that I like. You guys are making me want to learn Portuguese :(
How can you do flashcards at the gym? I guess while riding a bicycle or something. I can't imagine anything else you could do without injuring yourself. Or perhaps I should say that I can't imagine anything else I could do without injuring myself, and I'm not even entirely sure about that bicycle thing. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yeah, the only way I could do flashcards at the gym is on a stationary bike. It's better than watching the TVs they have mounted on top of the bicycles. Note to myself: don't try to do them during my aerobics class. Something bad could happen. :) Yes, join the Portuguese bandwagon! Dump your other languages! Hahaha! I have no idea why, but I find Portuguese fascinating. I'm not exactly sure what I will do with Portuguese; maybe it will be useful in the future.
