So, in an effort to add some (non-TV) contact with Korean..

I know nothing about Korean music. I haven't gone looking for anything (yet), and I would like to add some Korean music to mp3 player. So what are your favorite singers and bands? And can someone direct me to a site that has lyrics and translations?

I don't really know what kind of Korean music I will like. The only thing I've really heard is soundtracks. (Yi San comes to mind for the music.) I like pop in Italian and Spanish, but not so much in English, so I have no idea what will grab me in Korean. So share all your favorites, maybe with a YouTube link so I can check them all out. :)

In case you don't end up liking the many K-Pop offerings, there's a lot of nice indie music, which is often sort of folky with some electronic and south American influences. Once you get to the K-Indie part of youtube you can happily surf from one indie song to the next. A good place to start is orienkorean's channel.

A popular alternative band I like is Jaurim 자우림. Just google/youtube them...

One thing that may help is to watch a video of one or more of the weekly music shows
they have to get an idea of what artists are currently performing (though most groups go
back-and-forth between active and hiatus status throughout the year, so that will only
show the currently active ones for that date). These are the four I used to watch each
week (though I dropped M!Countdown a while back since I had to drop one for time
reasons and it was the one I liked the least).

- M!Countdown (airs on Thursday on M-NET)
- Music Bank (뮤직뱅크) (airs on Friday on KBS2)
- Music Core (쇼! 음악중심) (airs on Saturday on MBC)
- Inkigayo (인기가요) (airs on Sunday on SBS)

My personal favorite of those shows in Music Bank (partly due to trusting their
countdown chart more than the others and partly due to the way they display lyrics (more
text per page) compared to how the others do).

My current favorite K-pop girl group is AOA, which is kind of a hybrid group since they have
8 total members but perform as either a 5-member band (complete with instruments) or
as a 7-member girl group (complete with dance choreography). I don't particularly care
for most of the boy groups, but despite that I do really like CNBLUE (which is from the
same entertainment company as AOA and is also a band setup, not a vocal/dance
group).

Korean also has a huge range of music beyond pop though (Ballad, Rap, R&B, Rock,
Metal, Trot (a genre that is pretty unique to Korean), etc.) so there is plenty to explore.

Some of my favorite hiphop groups/artists are Epik High, Dynamic Duo, Leessang,
Eluphant, Garion, Fana, Huckleberry P, Cloudancer, Goblin Laboratory, and Simon Dominic
(Simon D).

My favorite soloists are BoA, Baek Ji Young, Taru, Lena Park, and Younha.

Favorite idol groups are T-ara, Kara, SNSD, EXID, A Pink, BESTie, and Hello Venus (off
the top of my head, I have more).

I find most Korean indie music to be painfully bland as shit, but there are good bands
like Glen Check, Annyeong Bada, Third Line Butterfly.

I don't like any male idol groups, their concepts are too gay for a male to take
seriously.

Can we not go down this route please?

If you find that you like the ballad genre, check out 성시경 (Sung Shi-Kyung), who is really the best ballad singer I've encountered so far and very popular as well.

Personally a few of my favorite girl k-pop groups are 2ne1, Nine Muses, Kara, SNSD

and my favorite male k-pop groups are Shinee, Big Bang, Infinite, Beast, BTOB

But then again it all really depends on the kind of music you like. Shinee does R&B
some times while Infinte usually stays with like super high energy k-pop. Then there
are the other genres of Korean music completely.

Some other groups that come to mind are Dear Cloud and Urban Zakapa (k-indie)
Also if you liked soundtracks for dramas and alternative music I think the 'Shut Up
Flower Boy Band' soundtrack might be worth listening to.
