Don't give up! John Steinbeck is a wonderful writer, and he is very good to learn from.
He doesn't use too much slang (even when characters speak with an accent, he keeps odd
spellings to a minimum), and he doesn't really say things differently from a modern
American. If you wanted to take on something easier, I'd recommend Of Mice and
Men, another one of his books.
If you get into American Lit., Steinbeck is one of the greatest in our history, and his
prose is very much in modern English style: clean and without eccentric vocabulary.
