liddytime, just so you think there's nothing in common between Vietnamese and Georgian:
When I type Georgian at Google Translator, it keeps switching from the phonetic keyboard to the normal keyboard.
So, when I try to type Georgian with the wrong keyboard, I get a random set of characters and Google often
"detects" it as being Vietnamese =D |

Ha ha ha! Oh that is wild!
Maybe there is a long , lost, ancient link between the two! :-)

I'm impressed!
After only two weeks and 30 minutes each day. Wow!
Hmm, maybe I should try the Assimil course.

I'm on Lesson 18 but this week things have slowed down quite a bit. I feel like it is a bit of the 3 weeks forward, 1
week back phenomenon. It is taking much longer to get through each unit. Not too worried though, I'm still having
fun and I'll keep plugging along!

Liddytime,
Your accent sounds good to me, like what I hear when I am around my wife's family. I am
amazed that you can produce this after only two weeks. However, I still want to get my
wife's thoughts. Am I correct that you studied Chinese before? If so, I imagine that
greatly helped your ability to produce the proper tones. Keep up the good work.

Thanks! I did study some Chinese and although Chinese is also tonal, the Vietnamese tones are (IMO) more
challenging than Chinese. The "low tone" of Vietnamese is more of a glottal stop that cuts off the last sound of
the word and in Vietnamese there are 2 "falling-rising" tones; one is "cut off' and the other is not. Vietnamese
is also more "staccato" than Mandarin. To my ear, it sounds much more like Cantonese than Mandarin.
To my dismay, today I discovered that the 6-week challenge has ended. I clearly got into it late.
I will, however, continue to trudge through Assimil. My goal is to complete it by the end of the year!

Your pronunication is excellent. It's amazing that you can pull together all the Assmil pieces in that video. I studied Vietnamese for two weeks and think it is the easiest language to read for a Chinese(if bilingual text is provided). I think a fun way to understand Vietnamese is by finding the classic Chinese equivalent words, trying to "map" it. For example:
Mr. What is your name?
My name is Ho.
What is your family- name?
My surname is Pham.
What is your work?
I am a journalist.
What about that woman? What is her name?
Her name is Tran Thin Lan.
She is also a journalist, isn't she?
No She is a teacher.
Ông tên là gì? 翁名乃其?
Tên tôi là Hồ. 名我乃何
Ông họ là gì? 翁号乃其?
Họ là Phạm. 号乃范
Ông việc của là gì? 翁职业乃其?
Tôi là nhà báo. 我乃日报
Ve cô ấy ? Tên cô ấy là gì? Ve姑也?姑也乃其?
Tên cô ấy là Trần Thìn Lan. 名姑也乃阮馨兰
Cô cũng là nhà báo, không phải? 姑共乃日报,空否?
Không ,cô ấy là giáo viên. 空,姑也乃教员
