A tragedy has occurred. Deastore have stopped selling books outside of the Italian and
English languages. When you live on the ass-end of the world "free worldwide shipping"
is a sacred phrase :(.

I've started watching Deustch Plus since people kept saying nice things about it
in a recent thread. I'm still on the fence after the fifth episode.
German Made Simple: ch 42
Parlons Allemand: pg 175
Japanese
I've finished the first volume of Death Note. I stupidly delayed ordering the second
volume in English, but it's coming. But I want to continue reading nowwwwww... but I
don't want to use a dictionary... :(

I finished German Made Simple and Parlons Allemand and am now halfway
through the short book Briefe an einen jungen Dichter by Rilke. I've been
listening to a lot of Die Ärtze and Farin Urlaub lately. I also watched a German movie
for the first time since I started learning, Der Himmel Über Berlin, it was
pretty good, maybe a taaadddd over rated though...?
On the books I finished:
German Made Simple gave me plenty of reading practice, but it wasn't
particularly interesting. I'm not sure what the Prof was thinking when he said in a
video that this is the sort of thing he doesn't mind going through lots of times. The
grammatical explanations were so and so. If I had my time again I'd use something else.
Parlons Allemand was a great book about German and the German people. I
was always engaged and the author seemed very erudite. The book is broken into four
sections. The first section compares German to related languages and to French, and
briefly looks at the cultural differences between the French and Germans. The second
section is a short grammar, of the "what would linguists find interesting" type rather
than the "here are the most useful facts about this language" type. The third is a
collection of 10 simple German dialogues interspersed with commentary from the author
on peculiarities of the Germans relevant to the dialogue (eg. the lack of rote
memorization compared to Gallic schools, the state of womens rights). The fourth
section ranges over all of German civilization, including high literature, philosophy,
politics and a lengthy detour into the contributions of Germans to the field of
comparative linguistics. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in languages
and Germany.

Still reading Briefe an einen jungen Dichter. I watched Aguirre, der Zorn
Gottes, which was very good, and Lola Rennt, which was one of the best
movies I've ever seen. I also watched Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing
in German dub.

Assimil:68, so I went less than 1 a day. It wasn't that I missed any days, but rather
would read just the dialog one day and just the exercises the next day)
The translation of Death Note volume 2 arrived and I'm up to page 51.
I fell in love with the rock band "The Pillows" and in particular
this song. After discovering they did the music
for an anime called, "FLCL", I watched the first three episodes. It is not a good show
for learners, it's weird, the plot is something between confusing and non-existent,
they speak crazy fast and the things they say are often non-sequiturs. I think I like
it? Gotta make sure I have a cup of sake with me while watching to loosen up the 'ol
noggin.

Watched a bunch of dubbed stuff:
Six episodes of Scrubs.
Two episodes of South Park.
One episode of Parks and Rec.
One episode of Community(Remedial Chaos Theory, repetition FTW)
The Princess Bride (my favourite movie since I was a kid, knew literally every
line in English before it came, and thus had a very high comprehension of the
German, loved it, sadly I haven't internalised any other movies to this extent.
Maybe Star Wars actually...)
The Lion King.
Rewatched Der Blaue Engel, and watched for the first time Das Leben der Anderen,
which was great.

Two episodes of Full Metal Alchemist, and the movie Akira.
I've been having a learning slump the last week or so. Don't feel much like
reading anything other than familiar poetry.
