I felt compelled to start a new topic since my first logbook is devoted to my German endeavors.
Basically, English is my life. I haven't gone a day without studying English for several years now. I don't care about German one bit. That doesn't mean I'm not going to learn the language, though.
Anyway, moving on to my English-related goals:
1. Listening to 10,000 hours (more like 20,000 hours) of spoken English. Music isn't spoken language, it's what I would call "sung" language.
2. Learning a lot of vocabulary. I'm talking over 15,000 words here. This is going to take me a couple of years at least. Reviewing the 16,000 words I already know is also on my to-do list.
3. Improving my grammar. I already use Lang-8, but I should read grammar books from time to time.
4. Discovering new TV shows. I try to keep an open mind when I turn the TV on, but I swear I'll go crazy if I watch yet another rerun of Friends.
Shows that I watch right now or have watched in the past:
(* if I watched the show in its entirety)
Scrubs*
The Big Bang Theory
Family Guy
The Simpsons
The Jerry Springer Show
The Ricki Lake Show
Sally Jessy Raphael
The Montel Williams Show
Cops
Bondie Rescue
Beach Patrol
Beauty and the Geek
American Dad!
Gilmore Girls
Charmed **
Frasier*
Will & Grace
Everybody Loves Raymond
The Cat in the Hat
Arthur
Curious George
Diagnosis Murder
Friends*
CSI: Miami
CSI: New York
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
Law and Order
Law and Order Special Victims Unit
The L Word
Hot in Cleveland
NCIS
The Mentalist
Monk
Veronica Mars
Glee*
Make it or Break it
Little Britain
Two Pints
Snog Marry Avoid
Underage and Pregnant
Small Teen, Bigger World
Deal or No Deal
Eggheads
Doctor Who
Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
Other British game shows
My Name Is Earl
Two of a Kind
Sabrina, Teenage Witch
Lockup
Lockup Raw
Candy Girls Bar
Various documentaries on BBC3
Corduroy
Tila Tequila (her reality shows)
The Jeremy Kyle Show
Supernanny US
Wife Swap US
Switch!
Food Network Challenge
The Daily Show (only a couple of episodes)
E.R.
I only listed shows that I liked and that I watched regularly, at least for a few weeks. In case you're wondering, there are 64 of them. I'm pretty sure that the list is incomplete, though!
Surprisingly, I own very few DVD's. I usually just leave my digital recorder on overnight. It's simpler that way.
Shows that I don't like include Prison Break, Monk and True Blood.
I never watch movies, but I'm trying to do something about it.
I should watch at least one movie per month.
Right now, I'm studying words for the SAT and listening to podcasts pretty much all day long.
When I want to take a break, I put some rap music on.
I watch Diagnosis Murder, My Name Is Earl and Gilmore Girls every weekday, but not on weekends (= two hours of English.)
Then, I usually watch a rerun of The Big Bang Theory (= 30 minutes.)
When I'm at the computer, I always have something playing in the background. I either listen to NPR or to a podcast for ESL students (= easily two hours.)
Anyway, that's what I do on busy days.
When I have a lot of time, I usually listen to English for up to 8 hours a day.

I don't know. Right now I'm more interested in Gilmore Girls. I might just buy the DVD's since I'm going to college soon. I need something to cheer me up!
I'm still working on SAT vocabulary. I already studied about 300 words, but I don't know them very well yet.
I'm currently listening to yet another podcast for ESL students.

Wow, it looks like all the cramming I've been doing is paying off.
Here's my new score: 20,500 words.
I'm really proud of myself. I could have scored higher if I had remembered the meaning of all the new words I learned though.
I currently "know" about 300 words, and I'm trying to memorize about 5,000 SAT words.
I need to use several websites instead of just sticking to the one.
I should also study the pronunciations of the new words I've been reviewing!

I was busy writing articles for my blog so I didn't really work on vocabulary this evening. Oh well, it doesn't matter—once I'm done preparing blog posts for next month, I'll have all the time in the world.
I should take my own advice and work more! Tomorrow, I won't have any time to study. I'm going to the doctor's in the morning and in the afternoon. I should probably do some more German today so that I don't fall behind.

Hi there,
Just a quick question out of curiosity here: how do you keep track of the hours spent
listening to the spoken language? Do you simply make a rough calculation of them or do
you meticulously keep count of every single minute?
I remember having lots of "logistical problems" doing it, maybe you can tell me how
you're dealing with such a thing ;)

I kept track of them very meticulously for the first thousand hours of AE.
I then gave up on this whole "get your stopwatch out and time yourself" deal.
That being said, I can't believe you had logistical problems doing it.
It's just about the easiest thing to keep track of. Buy a stopwatch, and keep hitting "start" and "pause."
Not having the patience to listen to that many hours of English is another story. If you were okay with putting in the hours, you should probably start over. This time, ditch the timer.
I just reviewed more SAT words. I have learned about 440 words so far. I still need to look up their pronunciation(s), though. I love learning words that make me sound smart!
I'm not a show-off, but I'd like to be more knowledgeable when it comes to college-level vocabulary.
I'm still listening to a podcast for ESL learners. I usually put the same episode on repeat till I'm tired of it.

I'll format my computer soon so obviously I won't be able to review vocabulary for a couple of days.
I need to re-install some important software before I use the internet post-formatting.
I used my old 1TO external drive today, and was surprised to find 200 GB of high-quality material on it.
I finally found the recordings of Twilight I had misplaced.
I'll probably listen to the four books even if I know the ending. I loved the first movie, but I was completely turned off by the second one, which means that I didn't get to really enjoy the story.
I spent quite a long time reviewing SAT vocabulary. I also answered 75 multiple-choice questions about vocabulary. Thanks to the fact that I've been learning a lot of higher-end vocabulary lately, I did fairly well on the "tests."
I also listened to Daddy Long Legs. I'm almost done with the last part of the book. I didn't pay attention for the whole time while listening to it, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
I hope that the ending is exciting.
Right now, I'm listening to mp3 recordings of audio tapes to learn vocabulary in English.
I like the fact that I keep seeing the same words over and over again.
Hearing them also helps, especially when they're tricky to pronounce.
For example, words such as punctilious: punc·til·i·ous
: marked by or concerned about precise accordance with the details of codes or conventions
are easier to learn with the aid of example sentences:
She's very punctilious about grammar.
I also watched Gilmore Girls and Diagnosis Murder. I really need to order Gilmore Girls on DVD. I'll go crazy if I don't watch the whole series soon. I love this show THAT much!
I'm really happy about the progress I've made recently. I'm impressed at my perseverance; I usually give up on vocabulary learning faster.
