No, young people nowadays generally are not fluent in Russian. Most can speak basics though and understand most of it. As for me, I'm just about at that level as well. We've all been hearing lots of Russian on TV since early childhood, so it's relatively easy for us to understand it, but when it comes to speaking, we tend to be quite slow, speak with accent and our speech is limited to basic conversations. There are quite many exceptions though, some don't speak at all and some are quite fluent. As for school, most people don't pick up much Russian there. I don't know if it's teaching methods or something else, but it was my least favourite subject at school as well. Now I wish I had studied it better, because I get to meet lots of Russian-speaking people and it's quite useful. And there definitely is not any stigma against speaking Russian in Georgia, the more fluent you are the better for you.

Can't seem to get your link to work, but I do seem to vaguely remember there being audio
for Aronson's book. I think I made a mistake when I first bought it by ordering the version without the audio. Or maybe that was Lehrbuch der Georgischen Sprache... Anyway, can you imagine someone reading out those hilarious sentences? Probably worth buying the audio for the comedy value! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Just as Aronson's book can be downloaded freely (not piratedly) from SEELRC site, the audio for it can also be accessed at Indiana University site:
http://www.iu.edu/~celtie/georgian_g311_g312_g511_g512.html The audio for other books is there, some of these are recordings of the own university. I bet that's the case for Tschenkeli's grammar's exercises. That's great news! No books, though. I personally never tried Aronson's audio either. I don't know, I'd find it strange to listen to textbookish sentences. I'd rather listen to dialogues or to actual conversational sentences like book2 ones. EDIT: I found the audio also for an old-fashioned soviet book I have! (Self-Teacher of the Georgian Language --Chanishvili, Tsuleiskiri, but the book is actually in Russian).
