We're probably at about the same level with Russian at the moment. I took Russian for a year in high school, but that was years ago, and outside of the first lesson of Rosetta Stone Russian that I'm working through, I can't say much outside of "good day" "thank you" and "hello". The ability to read Cyrillic has come back to me, but that's about it.
My goals for Russian are similar to yours. I want to be able to read newspaper articles in Russian and talk to my Russian Aunt the next time I visit her (I don't know when that will be at the moment). I hope to be able to pick out a word here and there during the Winter Olympics early next year. Good luck! My aunt lives in the US (she married my uncle) but I'd love to be able to visit Russia one day. She went to St. Petersburg (where her family is) with my grandma last fall, and it looks like they had a great time!
You can't study too many hours for the six week challenge (or too little). While you do compete with others, in a way, you don't have to be at the top of the board to push yourself to study more for the six weeks. I mostly considered myself to be competing with the people around my level. I've done the 6WC twice with Spanish. This will be my first time doing the 6WC with Russian. I'm working hard to finish Rosetta Stone Spanish (I'm on the last unit of level 5) before the end of the month, so I can pretty much focus on Russian, with a little bit of maintenance work and magazine reading, during the challenge. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

What about songs in Russian? Both English and German for me began with that.
Of course, you should watch some movies with and then without subs, but I'm no fan of Russian cinema, so I really do not know what to recommend, but I can help with a little but of Russian rock :) 1 person has voted this message useful |
