Not boring at all! That's what your log is for!
I'm looking forward to following your log. You have an ambitious goal, and I love the effort that you're already putting in by adding the French words that you know. I do think that you can reach your goal! If you put in the time and arrive in Switzerland with some basic conversational skills, you'll be able to really use your time there to become fluent in French. I agree with Cavesa - choose a program and stick with it. With a short timeline, it isn't time to "shop around" for resources. FIA is amazing, even if you don't have any of the books and are just planning on watching the videos online. And I've heard nothing but good things about Assimil, although I've never used it myself. So, since you have both of those programs, I think that it makes sense to focus on them. If you like Duolingo, then there's nothing wrong with using it! I liked it a lot when I was a beginner in Spanish - it was fun, addictive and helped me internalize sentence structure. Just don't let it become the cornerstone of your learning. That's what FSI, Assimil and language exchanges should be. If you want to become conversational in 3 months, I do think that it's extremely important to practice speaking. There are lots of good arguments for lots of input before speaking, but with your timeline and your goals, I think that conversation (speaking / listening) will be really, really important. Believe it or not, there are tons of French natives learning Polish! TV5MONDE offer exercises
and resources for learners. You can find listening materials with transcriptions and exercises so that should hopefully be a way to practise and test your listening skills. This might also help reinforce your RFI listening and up your aural comprehension. I hope this helps, and be sure to report back on your experiences. Bonjour!
Aujourd'hui et hier je listened to les RFIs actuels. Ils disent about Iraq beaucoup. Je commence comprendre le general topic of some recordings. I understood quand ils said (it would be nice to learn some past forms soon :P) ca Allemand scored a goal (even though it weren't on transcript) ;) Je fais my plan normally. I did deux FIA lecons avec leurs exercises longes. Je decide ca je vais faire seulement les exercises audio - puisque ils take plus d'une heure to finish. The 'dictation' exercises were the most difficult, and I failed many of them :( Je fais aussi 3-7 lecons d'Assimil. My advice is to keep going with FIA - but just accept that it takes a long time to
master a lesson. In pure time it takes me 2-4 hours per lesson to get through the material just once. Clearly, that does not mean mastery of the material. As to the dictation exercises, I find them too boring to write out, but what I do is just repeat the sentences until I understand what is said and can get them to flow fluently. That means you miss out on writing practice, but you still benefit from the exercises (the dictation exercises are often quite colloquial, so you still benefit from them). Je n'ai pas beaucoup de temps maintenant, du preparation du voyage et exams. De tout facon, je fais quelque Assimil et FIA lecons - je suis au 15 Assimil et 6 FIA. Je n'ai pas ecrit un peu, parse que j'ai eu des exams et j'ai commence a travailler. C'est difficile a trouver suffisamment de temps. Mais, j'ai eu une premiere conversation francaise - en avion j'ai assis avec un professeur de francais ;) La conversation avec elle etait bien.
