I had some lovely gingerbread cookies to eat, and to my surprise, they had ingredients listed not only in English/French/Polish, but also Arabic.

Today is Palm Sunday and the Passion from the Gospel of St. Mark is read.
At the end, there is a line which is not translated to the language the rest of the book is translated into. It made me curious, since "lema" seems to correspond to Arabic لي ما. A bit of Googling shows that this is indeed an Aramaic phrase preserved in all the Bible translations, and that Aramaic was a Semitic language. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

The neighborhood of Ibb university has been attacked. Based on news report, I assume it's the Saudi airstrikes.
One of my Yemeni friends, Sanad, was on the campus when it happened. Seems pretty shaken - his FB comments are all about how G-d protected them all on the campus. My immediate reaction was to write the other people from Ibb. Luckily they are unharmed. Yesterday evening my Tunisian friend Aida posted on FB (in French) that her grandfather died. The comments are a mixture of French and Arabizi [Arabic chat alphabet] and I'm having trouble deciphering them. I assume they are all the same phrase, but I can't get a solid base to put in Yamli due to all the crazy variation in spelling.

1. My condolences (strictly "Blessing(s) upon you (all)"): البركة فيكم 2. God have mercy: الله يرحمها 3. Lord have mercy: ربي يرحمها These are safe expressions.
