In my update yesterday I noted that I've been watching a lot of X맨. One good thing about
this is that the vast majority of them are unsubbed (I have what claims to be all the
available softsubs, but that still only covers not even half of the series and most of the
ones it has are later episodes which I've not yet reached), so I'm getting in far more
unsubbed TV watching practice lately. I pause occasionally to read certain items
on screen (mostly the tongue-twisters during 줄줄이 말해요 and the insults during 당연하
지) but otherwise I just watch the show and catch what I catch (which is a very decent
amount nowadays, including quite a few of the jokes and puns).

As noted in my Spanish post from yesterday, I'm repeatedly finding myself scrambling at
the last minute to meet my "active practice" goals for the week. It definitely helps on
those weeks where I get in a post in each language on Sunday, but I've been busier in
general lately making it harder to maintain some of my language goals. For example, my
evenings have been somewhat busier than normal so some of the language tasks I had
been doing in the evenings have been lagging behind. As such, I did all three lessons of
Let's Speak Korean yesterday rather than spacing them out on Mon-Wed-Fri as normal.
Fortunately they are only 10 minutes each, so combining them into a single 30-min block
wasn't unbearable. I did keep Destinos somewhat spaced out (which would have been
trickier to combine at nearly 30 min each), but even those were often late by a day (my
normal schedule for Destinos is Sun-Tue-Thu-Sat, but this week was Sun-Wed-Fri-Sat
instead).
At least I'm still accomplishing the stated goals, though. The other side effect (which is
what worries me more) has been reduced media immersion time. Other than X맨, I've
not really watched much at all (not counting items such as Destinos or LSK as I classify
those as "study" rather than "media immersion"). It has been nearly two weeks since I
watched an episode of Buffy La Cazavampiros (or pretty much anything in Spanish other
than Destinos) and even longer on Korean music shows (except for the one episode of
Challenge that I mentioned in yesterday's post).

떨구다 = to drop (used as 고개(를) 떨구다 meaning "to hang one's head, drop one's

(NOTE: At first I thought the usage of 들다 (to be needed, be required) in 힘이 들다 (to use
strength, need energy, require effort) was new (the actual phrase in the song is 내가 힘이
들 때) and even added it to my 단어 queue. Then later it finally occurred to me that this
is simply the uncontracted form of 힘들다 which I've known for years (I just hadn't
mentally linked the two when I first saw it written that way).

Since the song for the 1st month of TAC2014 was my favorite song from my favorite

favorite group.

I finally started watching some Buffy again and have 1 episode left of season 1 (which
was actually a half season, so counting the 2-hr pilot as two episodes (which the DVD set
does) there are 12 episodes).

Hoy terminé de ver la primera temporada de "Buffy La Cazavampiros". La mayoría del

Afortunadamente conozco bien este programa, así que no estaba muy perdido, a pesar de

For the first week since the challenge started I didn't do any LSK episodes, but given my
post in druckfehler's log that probably shouldn't surprise me. However, if I'm
not going to continue LSK lessons at the moment then I need to at least start one of the
other goals on the list (like the TTMIK lessons). Unfortunately work is getting in the way
again which is making this somewhat difficult.

I did an extra Pimsleur lesson this week to get back on track since I missed one last
week. I'm just about done with Pimsleur 3, so I'm going to need to get Pimsleur 4
purchased soon if I don't want to break stride with it (though I did take brief "pauses"
between the other levels, so it wouldn't be a huge deal if that did happen). Unlike
Pimsleur 1 - 3, Pimsleur 4 would be completely new to me as it didn't exist the last time
I went through the Pimsleur Spanish series (the 10-lesson "Plus" pack did, but I opted
not to purchase it).

I guess TTMIKs grammar lessons might work well for a commute, so maybe that's a possibility if it takes you a while to get to your workplace? If you want to spend more time on it, you can still go through the PDFs later in the day.

I had considered that. Right now I'm doing Pimsleur Spanish on the way to work and just
listening to music on the way home. I suspect I would get quite a bit out of the TTMIK
lessons even in audio-only form (and I can read the PDF later that day to clarify anything), so
I may try that (either after I finish Pimsleur or on my afternoon commute).

El viernes terminé "Pimsleur Spanish 3" pero todavía no he comprado "Pimsleur Spanish
4". Quizás debería saltarme la semana entrante y continuar después. (I'm only really
considering this because I just so happened to take a short break between the other sets,
so why not for this set as well.)

한국어 (2014년 2월 23일 - 2014년 3월 1일):
TTMIK: 제1단 제1회-제15회
I took druckfehler's suggestion and started listening to TTMIK lessons in the car (on the
way home since I use Pimsleur Spanish on the way to work). Since the first ones are
pretty much all review, I ended up listening to 3 per day for a total of 15 lessons this
week (which puts me over halfway through the 25 lessons of level 1).
New Korean Cards: 7
Four were from 이야기 제5회 and the other three were from the songs I had SE read
previously and had placed in a queue file ("AOA - Moya" and "Apink - NoNoNo").
Suspended Korean Cards: 16
All non-grammar cards from Feb 2013
Scorched Earth Reading:
- Rainbow - Tell Me Tell Me (no new words or grammar forms)
To clarify, I did learn two new phrases from this song, but I noticed them back when the
song was still being performed and added them to Anki back then. It wasn't until now that
I actually SE read the song, though, and there was nothing else new of note. Below are
the two phrases I learned previously from this song:
셀 수(도) 없다 = to be innumerable, countless, incalculable (one of the many meanings of
세다 is "to count")
시간을 벌다 = to kill time, buy time, stall
- TTMIK 이야기 제5회 (4 new cards)
예를 들어서 = for example, for instance
상냥하다 = to be gentle, tender, soft, suave, sweet, affectionate, kind(hearted), amiable,
affable
까칠하다 = to be haggard, exhausted, emaciated, gaunt, thin; to look worn out
되게 + ADJ = very A, really A (I've seen this form countless times before, but never quite
grasped what it meant)
I know I said I wasn't going to require myself to SE read the 이야기 lessons any longer
but I couldn't pass up the two useful grammar constructions and afterward I just ended
up SE reading the whole thing and adding the new items straight to Anki in the process
(not to my queue like I had been doing).
Extensive Reading:
- 와라!편의점 (read daily)(and read 제400회 today!)
- Twitter (a few visits each week)
Listening: I'm doing the TTMIK lessons as audio-only, so I guess that counts for
something
Active Practice: Posts on Twitter and CZ's blog
Song Memorization:
The main reason I SE read "Rainbow - Tell Me Tell Me" as my 2nd song for February is
because it is most likely going to be my March memorization goal. Honestly, it won't be
much of a challenge, though, as I have nearly the whole song memorized already. This is
mostly from playing it so much and paying attention to the lyrics back when it was being
performed (as it quickly became my favorite Rainbow song at the time and still is). If I'm
this close, I might as well finish it off and finally learn the missing phrases.
