Okay, so the new challenge is: Hear a non-dominant voice. This is based loosely on this (L1) challenge promoting diversity. That's a longer-term suggestion to read only a certain kind of writers for a year. Only women, or only non-white people, or LGBTQ+, etc. I'm suggesting something much easier, though. Instead of telling you what not to read, I just challenge you to consume some content by an author from a non-dominant category. It doesn't have to be a book either. Movies, songs, lectures, podcasts - anything counts, as long as the author (director/screenplay writer) is something other than a cisgender heterosexual white man. The person shouldn't be just a singer or narrator that merely amplifies the dominant voice. (By the way, native American counts as non-white) To say it explicitly, the content doesn't have to be about race, LGBTQ+ topics, discrimination etc. It can be anything. If you go for a non-modern author, you may be surprised how much internalized discrimination (self-loathing!) you'll see. But this also broadens your horizons and puts things into perspective. And keep it civil, of course. For some reason, this kind of discourse is often considered political. I don't want to argue whether there is such thing as racism against white people or sexism against men. Please accept that at least in the context of this challenge, they are not considered oppressed. This doesn't mean that they never go through hard times. Feel free to share the awesome content you already know, including translated content. For this challenge, though, you have to read/watch/listen to something new. But this can certainly be something that you've known for a while and never got around to. If you choose reading, it doesn't have to be an entire book. And it can be a blog post, a poem, a twitter account (minimum 20 tweets). It can be a chapter in a book, as long as it's not something you were already reading when the challenge was announced. You can also start it now and finish at your own pace, as long as you read one chapter in March. Harry Potter only counts if you are completely unfamiliar with the story. The HP movies don't count. Do your best to avoid speculation. Someone's gender and sexual orientation is part of their identity, not a dirty secret. Try to find a reliable source. Especially for modern writers, merely admitting past "experiments" doesn't count (e.g. Paulo Coelho). This challenge can't include all possible kinds of discrimination, but you're very welcome to share the content that explores first-hand experience with xenophobia, nationalism, antisemitism, disability/chronic illness, fat shaming, age discrimination (no matter whether one is too young or too old) etc. If you want to use these for the challenge, look for something that fits the "main" categories as well. The text above can be copied or modified as needed, for use in other teams/challenges. Anyone who happens to be inspired by the ideas expressed here is also welcome in the team thread or in my log. I'd like to recommend a book I finished reading yesterday: Reinaldo Arenas's Antes que anochezca. It was made into a film, Before Night Falls, starring Javier Bardem.

Easily one of the best autobiographies I've read. I should probably mention that the content is rather explicit. I'm not one to clutch my proverbial pearls, but some of the sexual practices and encounters recounted in the book did elicit an eyebrow raise from me.
