At this point, I think the most important thing is interacting face to face with native speakers. Things seem to stick better that way. The logistics of frequently doing that has always been challenging, mostly due to my schedule.

I will be able to attend that church related conference at the end of year. I find this a bit funny in that after being reminded to go, got a mailing for another one at the same time on the east coast. Anyhow now need to register; The form is completely in traditional characters.

Update; They changed the registration form; It has some English.

The project I am now at has some Mandarin speakers. I heard four people having a hallway conversation and was struck by the voice of the person who was doing most of the talking....an incredibly clear accent with very crisp enunciation. I haven't met these people yet. Then I discovered there's a 5th Mandarin speaker, someone I directly work with. He's from Malaysia. At this point I have no idea what sort of accent he may have.

Now that this new project has started, I'm doing very little echo'ing or shadowing. That seems to be a pretty big mistake. I need to get back in the habit of doing those things.

The Mandarin is affecting my English again. There are times I have difficulty just coming up with the English words.

Am behind in SRS entries which is not a surprize.

The Malaysian person is willing to help me with speaking practice. Since I generally have difficulties coming up with conversation subjects, he suggested playing games and mentioned a verbal form of Charades. He said that they played a lot of games, while growing up, to help their English.

Really tired lately and am not getting much done except working SRS entries...can do that during the commute to work on the train. I'm trying to get back into the habit of daily echoing and/or shadowing and am working one of my earlier acquired movies. I understand probably 95% of that dialog. It is interesting to echo a slight Taiwanese accent which doesn't necessarily match my understanding of how to pronounce the pinyin.

I have a vague memory of someone posting that working material in different places helped more than always working in the same spot like say your desk at home.   That’s generalization, a concept in learning theory. Well I’m noticing that I’m retaining my SRS material better after reviewing on the train where I will quietly repeat a sentence several times while watching scenery go by, or some other movement. Given that the images are distracting for me, especially when watching new movies, this is probably a personal biggie.

Still not in the habit of doing echoing....groan.   It’s a matter of the long work days and how drained I feel afterward. It would probably be easier if I was doing a familiar drive every day, by myself, because then the time in the car could be used.

Have not done any talking to the Malaysian fellow in Mandarin. My work days have been too busy to do that. I've been irratic lately in attending the Mandarin small groups too. I did ask someone who previously worked with me a bit, about working with me again.

There are some family dynamics going on that have mostly killed the original reason I chose to learn Mandarin. That was a decent part of feeling blah about my Mandarin recently. My husband pointed out that I've built some really good bridges with native speakers. In making the arrangements for the conference after Christmas, I'm starting to value those bridges even more. While the conference is basically local, it's far enough that with a 12-13 hour daily program, commuting back and forth makes little sense. So I reserved a hotel room and looked for a roommate to help share expenses. Well, I asked my Mandarin friends and now have a roommate who doesn't seem to really know English. Her accent seems pretty standard. This may be much more of an immersion than it was last year.

Watched one of my newer movies with my kids, in English. This is one that was purposely bought in Mandarin. There were several lines that automatically came into my mind, in Mandarin, before the English was said. Wondering if I should concentrate on this newer movie instead of working the older one that I chose. I really like this newer one but purposely avoided it as there is a ton of unfamiliar vocabulary.

Discovered working SRS entries while watching TV in English. It feels pretty good when I can come up with the correct Mandarin while looking at the moving images and hearing English. I was never able to do that before.

Really need to hit the echoing very hard.
