Good luck with FSI Snowflake. I started it about 2 months ago and stopped using it after I got to the end of Module 3 because I found it a bit monotonous and boring; however, after a month and a half of fooling around with other methods and not making significant progress I restarted FSI back up again a few weeks ago and am now up to Module 4 and finding that it isn't as bad as I once thought. Persevere through it like irrationale did and I think we will both make great progress.

Material-wise I’m trying to concentrate on, probably in this order;
1) FSI 2) grammar workbook 3) SRS reviews. I’m already behind here. Since I’ve been searching for subjects to discuss with my tutor, am going to have to tack on one more thing... ugh. We have been talking about recipes but are getting into more detailed food terms than I care to at the moment. A 4th item is really stretching things. I got an Alice Through the Looking Glass translation. Of course I'm going to have to save working with it for later. I will try to copy the cassettes to digital format though... am unsure how long our cassette recorder will last. My son has volunteered to help clean up the audio a little. An interesting thing is that the characters in the Alice Through the Looking Glass translation are hand written. 赵元任's character text for "The Mandarin Primer" also has hand written characters though the style there is slightly more cursive. I went to one of my groups today to find a slightly different set of people; I missed the announcements about meeting place changes. Since I wasn’t sure where my usual group had gone, I stayed there. Someone, who worked at a well known research facility, described some of the robotic units he worked with and repeatedly called them 怪兽 (guàishòu). I never would have thought of using that term for robotic units. Update; didn't get as much done this weekend as I'd like, basically due to feeling under the weather. So I've been laying down a lot and listening to movies. The upside is that my comprehension is noticeably better. A side note, probably since much of my material was dubbed or created for the Taiwanese market, or is otherwise southern, some northern speech styles and accents throw me a bit more. There were some people in the group this morning, I think from Liaoning, who seemed to have a more throaty way of speaking. I wished the Taiwanese woman, at work, a happy Independence Day. Since in the US on our Independence Day we usually have a BBQ with family and friends, I asked whether Taiwanese have a family meal together. She said that it was a day off of work for them. She said the family holidays are
1...Chinese New Year 2...Tomb Sweeping Day 3...Dragon Boat Festival 4...Mid-Autumn Moon Festival Wondering how much of FSI can I get through before the end of the year?! Though if I push that, doing the workbook will probably go out the window. I'm trying to use the local conference, in Mandarin, at the end of the year to push myself. As it is, the workbook is losing out as I haven't established that routine yet. One of my small groups is starting to have a regular volleyball practice during the week. I don't play but wonder whether to go support the team and of course listen to Mandarin. Update; trying to prepare for my tutoring session and feeling overwhelmed with the material I've chosen....this does not bode well. I'm also listening to CLO lessons during my walk to/from the train station. Have not started digitalizing the Alice Through The Looking Glass audio....also doesn't help that I'm coming down with a cold.

It hurts to talk so am not getting too much done... am looking at site which has the DLI material in addition to FSI. There are character texts too.
Update; I can't believe this...there are pinyin versions of my college textbooks at that site too. The version we used in school had Yale Romanization.
