It may be slightly more front or back but I don't notice a big difference at all. At most
one is a and the other is ɑ, but where I come from I don't really notice a big difference
between the two.

It certainly is not æ.

For me the difference is huge and exactly the kind of thing I don't want to get
wrong. If a Dutchman says Dutch "lang", it's immediately clear that he's not saying
German "lang", and that's what makes you recognizable as a foreign speaker. I'm more
concerned about that then any grammar or expression level stuff; for me, not sounding
German is a prerequisite for everything else, I really want to get past that.

English doesn't have æ in father, it has ɑ:.

Oh in father yes, I meant in "land".

The problem is that in the Netherlands and Belgium you'll hear about 50 variants for all
the a's depending on the dialect. But it's best to sort of make the sound more back in
Dutch yeah.

Oh, I see, sorry. Yes, I love the variation - I'm very fond of the Amsterdam long a,
the way the front man of the Osdorp Posse does it for example (although I'm aiming
for ABN myself).

Yeah in that case the a is slightly more back. But in general you should start from a
German pronunciation. Dutch rarely pronounces things the same way as English.
