Of course I was tempted to learn modern Chinese - learn it and with one fell swoop you will have learned to communicate with 1/6 of the people on the planet - what other language can offer this? I did make several stabs at it, but you are exactly right, I was "turned off by the tones." Pax to you and all who love it and to Victor and all whose tongue it is, but I really find Chinese to be an incredibly ugly language. I tried to overcome this purely subjective prejudice by focusing on its importance, but as I must initially learn languages by intensive shadowing, I just couldn't do it. After only a few minutes of shadowing Chinese, I begin to feel very unpleasant physical sensations because my entire auditory system is offended by what I am hearing, and it is as if my vocal tract is saying "stop! this hurts me! I don't want to make these sounds! please stop!" |

Back on topic, I personally have not been of the opinion that any language is actually ugly sounding, though there are times when I feel that a language sounds hilarious. This goes for some Cantonese speakers, angry Germans, and some Thai phrases. This effect would more than likely disappear with study since humor does not last. If I had to choose any language, however, I would decide that English is an ugly language. I can't explain it but I've never liked the way it sounds and prefer speaking in other tongues instead.

There've been times after prolonged stays in continental Europe where English seemed pretty ugly to me.

Don't you see that there is an enormous difference between positive (most beautiful) and negative (ugliest). People don't mind being called beautiful or intelligent, but they certainly don't want to be "the ugliest" or "the dumbest" or "the last person I want to know" nor do they want their language, culture, country be called that. This topic is insensitive, don't see that? |

Who cares?
Not every language is beautiful, and not every language is ugly either. It's certainly an interesting topic, and nobody should be personally offended. That said, we should remember that we are discussing the sounds and how they fall on our ear. Scientifically, there are sounds that are pleasant and unpleasant to hear, and I think you could say that some languages have more or less of these unpleasant or pleasant sounds. But furthermore, all languages have different accents (or potential for different accents), and accent is going to determine just what kind of sounds are produced.
My point (which I elaborate in the post following this): No language is inherently ugly, as you can find speakers of any language with beautiful accents. So, I think a better question is: Which language is spoken most commonly with an ugly/unaesthetic accent?

I think Chinese is probably the ugliest language I've heard. I don't know if it was Mandarin or Cantonese...perhaps both, but I really couldn't stand it. I find the various intonations they use to be quite unaesthetic. It isn't the language itself that bothers me, but just the accent. When Chinese people speak English with a strong Chinese accent, I absolutely hate it. (That's in contrast to other languages, where even if the speaker has a very strong accent, his speech may be incomprehensible, but not "ugly" to listen to.)
Quebecois French definitely gets a place under Cantonese and/or Mandarin. Obviously the language itself isn't bad, but a heavy Quebec accent (I think it's called "joual") could make someone want to go deaf. :p
Some dialects of Arabic are quite unappealing as well (Morrocan, I think). But then again, there are also some really beautiful dialects of Arabic, such as Syrian or Lebanese.
Oh, and from what I've heard of Urdu and Kazakh, I wasn't too pleased either.
I think the main thing to take from this is that all languages have potential to be beautiful or ugly, but the accent with which it is spoken is the main factor.

I don't think Chinese, Korean, and all the other South East Asian languages sound ugly per se, but they sound more comical to me. The rhyming, pitch shifting sound of the languages seems humorous.
I don't particularly care for English either...again, not that I would call it ugly, it's just a very drab, dull language in most contexts. Of course, if a talented singer sings in English, that's far from dull, but I find that in general day to day talking it is indeed rather boring.

Apparently, there are some people on this forum who need to grow up.
Stop going out of your way to take offense at something that wasn't meant to be offensive. I personally don't find any language inherently ugly, but this topic is interesting and I like to know the tastes and opinions of fellow language lovers.
Go ahead, tell me English is a hideous tongue, I won't care.People have said beautiful things in all languages, so to me all languages are beautiful.
Love!

I agree. Grow up already. If you are so thin sinned what on Earth are you doing on the internet?
For me, the ugliest sounding languages are Mandarin, Dutch, and Spanish, but I will learn at least two of them eventually anyway.
