This is an interesting discussion.
It speaks more of aesthetics than anything else but that doesn't necessarily invalidate the opinions or feelings of those who've contributed to the discussion.
I kind of like this. It's rather revealing ;) No one can really argue anything here because it's all relative and personal. You either disagree or agree.
For what it's worth, I don't care for Tagalog. I won't say it's "ugly" because that's a bit strong. I just don't know much about it. I'm actually hoping I'll get somebody to tell me a bit more about it :)
Edit: anyone who thinks German sounds weird needs to read The Awful German Language by Mark Twain. It's a great satirical look at German!
Edit again: Okay, just a thought...should we split the discussion into two groups? Those who find a language to be ugly and who already speak it/know it, and those who don't have any prior knowledge at all and just plain don't like it? Would that make the opinion any less valid?

Oh my dear Sunja, your suggestion is witty and clever but you'd make the discussion even fuzzier :)
I think those who didn't approve of this thread to begin with already vented their dismay and moved on.
By the way Mark Twains article on German is a real gem for language fans, especially if you know German. It is very tongue-in-cheekly and I think Twain came to appreciate the language.

Point in case for me: I am deeply fascinated by Turkish. I think it sounds ugly, yes, but its grammar is intriguing. |

No way! Really? I think it's one of the most pleasant sounding languages on the planet! Also, Urdu sounds really good to me, but has been mentioned as ugly..
Personally, I don't like tonal languages, especially Vietnamese. But the language I dislike hearing the most is Arabic with it strange emphatic consonants, which sound pretty aggressive to my ears, and the gagging sound 'ayn, which provokes associations to vomiting.

The danish language... Period
Go to youtube and search for the danish language. you will se a comedy scetch by norwegian comedians about the
danish language, and how nobody understands it, not even the danish!
I cant remember if some part of it were in norwegian, but most of it was in English. |

I think danish sounds like vomiting. Though, for some reason it is one of my favourites. I should learn it.

I didn't think so many people would think Dutch was ugly, I think it sounds adorable! xD The replies about Russian are a shock too, I think it's really pretty.
Hmm, I personally, really don't like French, it's probably the only language I wouldn't learn. >w< Also, I have a love hate thing going on with Spanish...I like too watch anime dubs in Spanish and Telenovelas from Mexico and the language will sound really cool, the female voices the most, but I don't really like any other regional Spanish, especially from Spain. ]:

Look,
If someone told me Slovak is an ugly language, I would take it personally. Someone else might not get offended, but a lot of people would..thus I think by calling languages ugly you necessarily offend a lot of people any way you look at it. For some people their native languages form a big part of their culture (I mean.. how do you separate a Czech person from a Pole or a Slovak for instance?.. we all look the same, it's the language, culture and history that separate us).. for centuries books have been written in them and so on and so on.. so by saying that a language is ugly for some of us you touch upon a sensitive topic. Poems, songs, novels.... have been written in them and were meant to be beautiful and understood that way. You have to respect, that when you start calling a language ugly, for a lot of people (me included) it clashes with this personal point of view.
For me..it's a different concept, when you say that the SOUND of a language is unpleasant to the ear, or that the LANGUAGE itself is ugly..just mentioning that, since that is the topic of this thread.
I agree that the 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and that any language can be beautiful when spoken by a charismatic person and ugly when spoken by a drunk construction worker..and that someone might get offended and someone might not.. but why hate? Just like you say that there are different tastes in a lot of things.. getting or not getting offended is one of them and in this case, I think you would not have a problem finding a lot of people that would effectively get offended if you say that their native language is ugly (not that the sound of the language is unpleasant to the ear).

Vlad, I see your point coming from an area where national self-consciousness is fostered more compared to North America. Yet I think that there's a bit of self-selection going on in this thread. The people who take offense to this question have said their piece and refrained from commenting further, while those who aren't bothered by the idea, have posted but haven't been as foolish so as to use this thread as a flaming session (so far). I also agree with your point that some of the opinions here will clash with that of others. Yet, by and large, people can agree to disagree and leave it at that. I don't see the need to automatically cut off the discussion before it can even begin.
This could be just my imagination, but I wonder whether being a native speaker of English or another "prestige" language tends to elicit a greater willingness to have this kind of discussion. Certainly we native speakers of English realize that English is so widespread and appears in so many different varieties that there are some varieties (even our own) that sound unappealing or look unattractive. As I stated earlier, after spending some time in Europe on various trips, the appearance and enunciation of my native idiolect at home seems rather ugly. It's a little weird.
