Alrighty,
Français: Today, I did my eight hours of course. I can feel/see/notice an improvement in my aural comprehension and oral expression. Also, I have no problem following 'FBI: Disparus' aka FBI:Missing Persons Unit, which my girlfriend is watching in the background. Furthermore, I think that I have made an improvement in my written comprehension. However, I haven't noticed any great change in my written expression. It is something that I will need to work on a fair bit in the future. It isn't horrible, but not all that amazing either. I have to go to the bank in the morning, suss out why they haven't added my tax return to my account yet, those bastards, those french bastards, so some more speaking practice is on the way. I also have a picnic tomorrow evening with my classmates, so I am hoping it will be fun. The lack of traditional Australian foods of the picnic variety is a pain in the arse though. So, we will see how well my attempt at potato salad turns out. Not exactly language related, but I will have to buy the ingredients in French, so violà some relevance. I think I am in a bit of a slump independant study wise. I am not too worried though, it is just that I have my trip to Spain, and limited opportunity to get work done, plus the fact that I will miss a week of classes, etc. that make me feel as though I should be doing more work than I have been over the last few days. Turkish: Most of lesson 3 and a Touch of lesson four. Dropped my MP3 player, and restarted in the wrong lesson. But still. I am understanding more and more. Is nice, slow, and rewarding in it's own way. As an aside, the war in Georgia did bring to my attention their different script, and here I was thinking that it would be cyrillic or something similar. I find it kind of cool really, all squiggely and foreign to me. I also stumbled across some Romansch on the internet. I can sort of kind of understand it. 3 hours of class, had to write a page long 'email' on my last holidays to a 'friend' which the prof will correct with her big red pen of doom. Will get it back tomorrow and see how I go. Wasn't feeling all that crash hot today, didn't try too hard, just cruised through the lesson so if it is full of errors, like normal, I won't be chastising myself. I also bailed on the picnic, due my lack of wellness. Turkish: I did about an hour of Pimsleur, Lessons 3 and 4 in their entirety. I like the vowel harmony, it is kind of cool. I think that I need to start writing/reading. I can't keep just doing audio, I sit there and try to puzzle out how the words, phrases are expressed in their written form. I am just that kind of guy. Had the odd experience of remembering the phrases in Italian, and wanting to say them. This lead me to thinking about Italian and... Italiano: I am going to relearn it right from the beginning, as such, I just finished Pimsleur lesson 1, I found myself skipping chunks of it, mostly the focus on prononciation as I am not a complete beginner. In addition to this, I also listened to someone recite Maupassants - La Reliquia, which went for about ten minutes, and I was surprised at how many words, phrases etc I could remember. I was also kind of disappointed by how many I didn't. But I can feel it there, somewhere in the back of my head waiting to be unleashed. So I will try to work my way through some audio courses, pick up some workbooks etc, to bring it back to life. One good thing that I hope will carry over from my French is my understanding of grammar. I never got into the more difficult tenses, subjunctive type of things at uni. So I am hoping that when I get to learning them in Italian, it will be simpler. I am hoping that if I (re)learn it through French, I won't get them mixed up, if I do mix them up I figure I can focus on Turkish for a time, then return. That's all for tonight. Thom. Yesterday: Did my three hours of class, and an hour of study for it. Today: Did my three hours of class, and an hour of study for it. Had to do a wee little presentation on the history of L'Arc de Triomph. Went alright. That 'page long 'email' on my last holidays to a 'friend'' that I had to do the other day, was about as good as I was expecting 12/20. But atleast she has pointed out the stuff I do badly. Not too fussed, as I said, I didn't put any effort into it. Turkish: Yesterday: Turkish Pimsleur 5, bit of music Today: Turkish Pimsleur Six, we got cable tv, and I now have a Turkish station. So awesome. Italian: Nothing more to add. I got some (read: a few hundred) Italian songs to listen to. Have listened to three of them. New tv stations also include, 5 arab, 4 Chinese, 3 Russian, 2 Portugese, 1 Spanish, 1 German, 1 Tunisian (french), 1 Algerian (french) and 40 other french channels and some other languages which I have forgotten. All in all, pretty cool. I will probably post tomorrow, but if not, it is because I am getting ready to spend the next week on the beach on the southern coast of Spain, I am sure you will all forgive me. Wow, nearly at the bottom of the second page. You people have been busy this last week. It is good to see. I realy like Granada, didn't enjoy the coast so much. Found it to be very, very touristy, very very dirty, and Spanish food, is horrible. Had one good paella, in granada, and that is it. I did like the 'country side'. A stark difference to what I am used to. I also went to the Moulin Rouge last night with my girlfriends family. I was in the front row, thought I was going to get kicked in the face every few mintues. I got dragged up on stage by the venquilitrist and covered in feathers and other assorted costume parts. Was rather impressive.
Understandably my workload was slightly reduced this past week. However, I did manage to do: Français: Read the chapter of my text books that we should have (presumably) gone through at school, read a couple of chapters in my Grammar textbook. Listened to Michel Thomas Advanced French thingy, CD 1 and spoke with my girlfriend. Turkish: Finished the first (and only) ten lessons that I have for Pimsleur. Though I will need to go over the last few as I missed a fair bit. Went through the first few FSI things. Don't like the quality of the audio, but oh well. I will buy Assimil this week, still need to suss out if I can get the audio from the local library, and thus save money by just buying the book. Italiano: Went through Michel Thomas' Italian language builder. Refreshed a fair bit, realised that I will really need to start from the basics. Español: Picked up a few phrases, lots of disaster words associated with plane crashes, and stuff. I don't overly like Andalucian, aka the Lispy Spanish. So I managed to not buy a bunch of language learning materials. In fact, it has pushed my disire to learn Spanish further down the list. Oh well. Ben, aujourd'hui je suis allé à l'école et j'ai fait mes huit heures. Avec seulement trois semaines restant il faut Totalement Annihile Français, hah une blague, TAF, donc Taf qui est l'argot pour travail. Voilà je dois travailler pour améliorer le plus que je peux. C'est évident que mon écriture est très mauvaise, et c'est ça que je dois donne le plus d'efforts.
En plus, j'ai acheté des livres pour apprendre l'italien. J'ai acheté ; <<ItalianissimO : Méthode>>, qui a 74 chapitres pour apprendre et se perfectionner, en plus j'ai le livre <<Grammaire de L'italien>>, et <<Conjugaison Italienne>>. J'étais un peu choqué que le gamme des livres pour apprendre l'italien était si petite, à la comparaison de le choix des livres pour Espagnol ou Allemande. Comme vous voyez, mes livres sont tous en français, et c'est comme ça que j'espère que je ne vais pas mélanger les deux langues. Moi, j'espère que si je le apprendrais l'italien en français je vais créer une différent chambre dans mon cerveaux et donc, ne pas confondre les deux. le Turc, Cette après-midi j'ai vu, de moins ou plus, un émission turc, comme Sesame Street, mais avec une qualité des années quatre-vingt, c'était simple et crée pour les enfants turcs, mais je ne savait pas plus que 1 mot dans 20. Alors, je pense que ce serai un bon méthode de apprendre le turc. C'est a 5.30, et je vais essayer le voir demain. Well there you go. French: Today I went to school, it was ok. Italian: Afterwards, I bought a couple of books for learning Italian. I was dissapointed with the choice available. I would have thought that there would have been more. But alas. I was however happy with the price. Turkish: Watched a bit of turkish tv this evening, it was a show similar to Sesame Street, the sesame street of the 80s. I learned the numbers. ;). Thom. I did 2 hours of study on top of my regularly scheduled programme of classe. I also finished the chapter on subjunctive in the advanced grammar workbook I have for the class I moved out of. I have the new goal (restating part of an old goal to make sure I do it) of finishing all of my textbooks for the school in the next three weeks. That's four books. 1. Alter Ego 3 B1 level du CECR(It has nine chapters, I have done Five, four to go.) 1a. The cahier d'activités which comes with Alter Ego 3 (As above) 2. Grammaire Progressive du Français (Avancé) Presumably B1 level (27 Chapters, I have done 5, this explains my crappy level of grammar compared to the others in my class, doesn't it?) 3. édito: Methode de français B2 (10 chapters, of which the class has done 5 in 10 weeks, and we now have three weeks to go. I don't know how that is supposed to work, but I will start at Chapter 8 and work my way to the end, whilst presumably doing 6,7 in class.)*EDIT: FINALLY FINISHED, A bit late, but oh well* 4. L'Expression Français écrite et orale. B2-C1 level. (39 Chapters of which I have probably done, non-sequentially, around 10 or so.) and if I have time 5. Vocabulaire Progressive du Français, I think it is intermediate, I have had it for over a year, I just never finished it. It is mostly finished. I am atleast, halfway through all of them. Will do my best to blitz the language over the coming weeks. Turkish: Today, nothing. I now have a username and password for an online databases and ebook library at Australian university, and managed to find a 500 page ebook on Turkish grammar. Downloadable, and thus saved on my hard drive. Looks like it will be useful. Turkish is going to go on the furtherback-burner for a while. Italian: Nothing, satisfied in having the books. Will make steady progress on this, if I can, in addition to my French blitz, if not, three weeks doesn't change anything. Thom. My one hundredth post.
Français: Yesterday I did one chapter of my previous textbook, and one chapter of my previous grammar. I also copied out two pages worth of sentences which are great at showing the different nuances in word usage eg. Réduire: Réduire à qqch: Ils on été réduits au chômage. Réduire en qqch: La bibliothèque a été reduit en cendres. Moreover, it gives me some writing practice, and is hopefully rubbing off on me. I will try to do another couple over the next hour, then we a going to go to the cinema. I have, as always, been going to school as well. My class is getting smaller, a couple of people have left, their lives taking them elsewhere. I will see it through though. Never fear. *edit* Look who's a senior member! So my french annihilation was defeated by a nice relaxing weekend on the coast, where I bicycled and passed my time like a good parisian tourist in Breton. Dispite its reputation, the weather was perfect, and I have more of a tan now, than I did in Australia. Go figure. It was kind of cool to see Breizh (Breton) language signs around the place as well.
Français: Class on Friday, weekend of talking to my girlfriends family, shop keepers and hotel managers. Today: My 8 hours, we went over the articles, again, so I hope I am making less and less errors as I go on. Only one more 8 hour day to go. Whoopie. Turkish: Nada I didn't take anything with me. Italian: The same, for the same reasons. Nice to see that I am on the second page after just three days. Vive le revolution and all that. Thom.
