Mr. Tucker,
Although the course offered on the link you provided seems to come with more recorded material than the one I have, I would wager that they are one and the same. To the best of my knowledge, Linguaphone tended to repackage its courses with additions much more frequently than it remade them. However, I would need to see a sample page from this one to compare it to my own book in order to be sure. If it should turn out to be a new and different edition, then it may be as good or better than the one I have, but the odds are that it is much more likely to be inferior. If you can afford to take a gamble, go ahead and order it from the company - they do have a guarantee, do they not? On the other hand, older courses are really not that hard to come by on e-bay. I know that I have seen "my" Arabic courses offered several different times over the past few months, so unless you are in a desperate hurry to get it, keep a watch for it and sooner or later it should materialize.
Alexander Arguelles
P.S. I hope I am wrong, but I do believe I may have heard somewhere that the Linguaphone company has just gone out of business.

Fortunately, you are wrong. The Hong Kong branch has closed (it filed for bankruptcy), but the company as a whole appears to be in business. The Linguaphone UK site, for example, seems fine.

Dear Professor,
I have of late been going through your recommendations regarding study materials as part of my search for a good Modern Standard Arabic program. As you did above, you have repeatedly and strongly recommended the 1977 Linguaphone course. Obviously, a thirty-year-old course is a difficult thing to obtain, so I was wondering if you could give an opinion as to the quality of the modern edition, the one found here.
Many thanks,
Sincerely,

Surely the best way to resolve this would be to make a direct email enquiry to Linguaphone? You just need to ask whether the course they are currently selling is the same (or an up-date/re-print) of the course written by Dr Fuad Megally and Prof. M Mansoor in the 1970s.
When their answer comes back as "yes" (which it will) you can be 100% confident that you are getting the same course as Prof. Arguelles!

However I notice that they now offer far fewer languages than they did previously. Does anyone know when and why they started cutting back on their courses? I myself am trying to get hold of their Polish course which is now out of pribt it seems.

Jon, I did as you suggested, and it appears Prof. Arguelles is correct. Since 1978, they have only repackaged, not redesigned the materials in any significant way. Definitely excellent news for me. Thank you both.
