There are webcasts of news broadcasts in slightly slowed down and simplified, but natural sounding Russian at www.gwu.edu/~slavic/webcast. They are quite short but there are dozens of them with transcripts and lists of key vocabulary.

Thanks; I'd stumbled across that, but not listened. I just picked the Pavarotti webcast (at random), and without looking at the supporting material, could natural-listen to it. I didn't get every single word and detail, but I understood the gist of every sentence easily. I was sad to hear of his passing - I'd been unaware of it.
This suggests that 45 hours of L-R over two weeks gives listening comprehension comparable to 2 years of college Russian - and possibly better, given the admonitions to read the notes and exercises first. That's..... interesting. I'll definitely play more with this site, but I'll continue doing L-R as my primary activity for now. I just redid the first chapter of "The Master and Margarita" (this was the 2nd time I L-R it in Russian), at 150% speed, and found I could natural-listen a fair amount of it, and that perhaps half the structure seems transparent (the interactions of prepositions, cases, verbs, and verb affixes is going to take a while yet, I think). Speeding up Russian audio is even more helpful than speeding up Polish audio, because it makes the stress stand out much more clearly. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||
