Hi Snowflake. The Graded Reader was mentioned in this paragraph

Update;
1...Downloaded "Peter Rabbit" from www.creationsbycrouch.com/audiobookc.htm which
includes audio.
2...Ordered "Anna Mei Banfa!: A Short Novel In Simple Chinese: Characters And Pinyin" by
Terry Waltz.
3...Ordered "Graded Chinese Reader 1" by Shi Ji. It comes with a MP3 CD. If I like it
enough, then will probably order volumes 2-3 from overseas as it's much less expensive,
even with shipping. The series is abridged Chinese contemporary short stories which will
hopefully will hold my interest.

Hi JeremiahT. Take a look at www.purpleculture.net. There's another overseas vendor which carries these for about the same price though cannot recall which one. Be aware that the number of stories in these books is rather limited. Good luck!

I’m at a little over 700 characters now. My retention rate while dipping a bit is basically hovering in the same range, around 70%.   Since we’re using Heisig, the emphasis is on remembering the character and key word though not necessarily the Mandarin sound.   Having some speaking and listening comprehension under my belt, in many cases I automatically gravitate to remembering the Mandarin pronunciation.   I’m starting to occasionally skim websites devoted to some of my hobbies as well as some books (not necessarily graded readers)...do not assume that my comprehension is good as the idea is to SKIM and pick things up here and there. Due to job commitments, there’s not much time to actually talk with a native speaker... am rarely making it to small group meetings. I occasionally chat with my overseas Taiwanese language partner.   Am sort of annoyed about the lack of time but that was expected.   My husband thinks a break is needed since I’m annoyed about what was anticipated. I'm concerned about having enough intensity though realistically there’s not a whole lot that can be done about that while maintaining sanity for my job.

I’m skimming through a translation of "The Hobbit" found at www.mandarinbook.info/chinesebooks/hobbit/ .... stumbled upon it while looking for something else. Anyhow, it has traditional characters with pinyin though the pinyin is sometimes spotty.

Rechecked the SinoSpoon outline and am wondering if I’m reading correctly as it mentions covering 7500 characters. I’ll be happy to come out of this knowing 3-4000 characters extremely well.

I’m starting to look for regular books. This Taiwanese bookstore list is courtesy of my overseas chat partner...

Day 101 of SinoSpoon.... Am annoyed with how much time I don't have to read/skim. I'm a bit excited about placing a book order which will include "墓碑:中國六十年代大饑荒紀實". It will probably take the rest of my life to read the entire book but hopefully I'll be able to get through some sections with the help of a dictionary. I've wanted to read this ever since hearing about it. An English translation was recently released but I'd rather try to read it in Chinese.

Khatz's material now has a separate link for Neutrino.

Discovered "華人星光大道" on YouTube. It may be a Taiwanese version of "The Voice" but since I've never watched that, it's hard to say. "華人星光大道" has subtitles of everything that is said or sung, in traditional characters.

Hi, I've also started Mandarin log recently. Wow, your log is 4-year-long. So inspiring!
Even if reading something in English still takes a great deal of time for me, I'll try to
read your old log just to see how you grew up, so I can learn from it! :)

Youngbin, thanks for your kind words. Should mention that I'm not exactly "grown up"....Between my job and other commitments, sometimes all I can do is creep along. Good luck in your efforts!

Day 106...per SinoSpoon assignments I was supposed to be at 1000 hanzi on day 104. The last two days, the SinoSpoon assignments have emphasized other things so am trying to catch up a bit. I'm at 865. With my retention rate creeping downward as more characters are covered, I'm realizing that reading needs to be an extremely high personal priority. Am surprized at how much I understand of the "The Hobbit"...read it so long ago that I only remember the rough outline of the story. I also ordered a used copy of one of the earlier Harry Potter books, in traditional characters, even though I already have most of those in simplified...and yes I know that the traditional and simplified versions are entirely different translations. I'm eyeing ordering childrens books in traditional characters such as "The Wizard of Oz" and some of the Charles and Mary Lamb versions of Shakespeare.

BTW, does anyone have experience ordering from www.hkbookcity.com? Their prices seem to be less than the Taiwanese sites mentioned earlier. Also, they accept PayPal which makes me feel more at ease about ordering from an unknown overseas site.
