Ah reineke! Your tip would have served me so well last month! The old place that we just moved out of was where I had the wallpaper nightmare -- two rooms completely covered. According to a Medieval clause in our rental agreement I had to remove the wallpaper before moving out. I bought this "wallpaper remover solution" (Tapete Ablöser) but I would have tried your vinegar idea. I had to "drench" the walls in water and this solution and it was still a hassle having to scrap and peel off the sticky leftover-paper. Good riddance to that. My new place has this wall covering (Raufaser) that you can just paint over. It's soooo much easier.
Hey, maybe in the course of me getting my new house renovated I can turn part of my log over to "home improvement tips" ;-). I'm working on weeds at the moment. The house is old but it has a garden and while nobody has done any maintenance on it in years it looks like a jungle. Never had a green thumb so I'm not very good at gardening. A few people came over today to help with the house. A friend brought over a new Balken for the Schaukel (outdoor swing) and I had to help with that. Then we had to build a countertop for the kitchen...
Despite all the people I was able to stow away for a few minutes and I translated 1-18 grammar sentences from Kanzen Master. For example I translated "Teachers who use (wield) force (targeted at) students is a problem" for 教師が学生に対して暴力をふるうのは問題だ 。 I'm using "vis-a-vis" for taishite but I prefer "targeted at" for this context (it's more descriptive -- and that helps me remember it). Translating takes time, often more than an hour for a page of sentences. I'm very thorough and google through many examples before I'm satisfied with a definition -- that plus the grammar and the vocab are largely new to me. I'm REALLY looking forward to some listening practice when everyone is in bed and I'm not needed anymore. Always ready to help too late with useless advice. Concerning your current weed problems the answer is easy. Try taking care of them - they'll all die. Or declare your yard as a natural wildlife refuge. Germans are supposed to be very green nowadays. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

That's true. I could put them in a flower pot and care for them and they'd probably die! Hadn't thought about that. Yes, Germans are much more environmentally disciplined than the Americans. Here comes a big Texan-stereotype: in the neighborhood where I grew up only a few people had gardens. My old neighborhood had lawns that were ankle-deep in weeds. Then we used to let our old delapitated cars/boats/motorcycles sit out in the front yard so all the neighbors could ogle and marvel at how long they'd been sitting there. The grass would stop growing in the shadow of the car and we wouldn't have to mow it ;)
Back to Japanese: I've decided to watch the same film again and I've been studying the listening quizes. Quizes 19-22 were my goal today. I listened and read from the transcripts for about an hour. Some of them I have recorded so I'll probably skip the next batch and move on into -- ugh, there goes the phone --
ehm, move on into 25-30. These quizes are great! Exactly the listening comprehension level that I'm at. I've been distracted from doing my flashcards. I wonder if getting an egg timer would work. I have to go to the store tonight. Maybe I could pick one up. I'd set it to go off in 20 and then stop whatever I'm doing and make a flashcard or two. Sounds extreme but I'm having trouble finding a block of time where I can do about 50 cards. I'm not moving at all through my Kanzen Master book. I want to buy another one but I have to get through this one! I'll really double my efforts. Manga searches will have to wait. I really want to get into the 19-28 grammar points of KM tonight. I just have to remember: just 150 grammar points and I will have covered aall the grammar for the intermediate level. That's exciting! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I didn't go over any new quizes but I went over some old ones. I've also been listening to Seebit TV. These reports are completely uninteresting but make great listening comprehension practice of dates and times. I tried FNN but it's mostly a political jumble right now. I'll try back in a few days. Maybe there'll be something good...
I translated a couple of paragraphs that contained nitsurete, totomoni, nitomonau, nitaishite, nitotte, nitsuite, toshite....and others. Then I started the next chapter: I'm barely into grammar points 21-23. I studied examples of ueni and uchini and kawarini. I had a tough time of it at work tonight so I'm a bit tired. Tomorrow should be a little easier -- should be -- ... I tried that egg-timer thing. Works okay. I use it to keep time during study (for example, I only have 40 minutes before I have to leave and I want to cram in some more sentences) I didn't use it to remind myself to stop and go study, like I mentioned yesterday. Very tired today. Stress at work. I've got a work-related problem that's been weighing on my mind today....
But thankfully I've gotten my dose of the forum. Now I can leave it alone and continue here with my TAC ob-LOG-ation---*chortle* I just translated 33 example sentences. Working my way through grammar points 19-35. I did examples of ~kurai, ~saichuuni, ~shidai, ~seika, ~tatotanni. I'm at 28 and hoping to tackle 29-33 tomorrow. That's 25 more example sentences to read/translate/digest. I don't think I can get any farther than that. I want to have time for listening, and I also want to go back to one of my older/(easier) books and read (outloud) from it. After this heavy (new) grammar study I really need to jump-start what I've previously learned. I'll be going back to what I was working on before the move. The move back to French is nowhere in sight. All in good time. We still have stuff in boxes and I won't get to that tomorrow, either. Rome wasn't built in a day. I've been going over あかずきんちゃん. I like the rythym of the young person's voice. The speech is exaggerated and drawn out and shadowing it is a lot of fun. (Not the Miffy song.)
I also downloaded 注文の多い料理店 from TheJapanShop.com. I've listened to it off and on all day (20 minutes long) and I'm about to go over the text using the scriptorium technique. I've only listened so it will be interesting to see how much I could pick up. I was thinking of making it my next benchmark test, but there's too many words like "兵隊"soldier "鹿"deer "横っ腹"belly-side up "札"doorplate...the list goes on. I didn't think it would be fair to listen and try to grasp what's going on without knowing all the words. I'd only be getting half of them. With the nice gloss. that it provides I won't need the transcript. If the TheJapanShop gets more of these I'm going to grab them. For a mere 3 Euros per download it's practically a free gift! I went over 29-35 grammar points from Kanzen Master (37 example sentences translated and digested). 1 person has voted this message useful |
