Just a little progress report here while I wait for the garbage to disappear from my previous post.
I'm just about to finish Level 3. Level 4 will follow in a couple of days. I've already gotten started on 5,6. Each level has 200 words. I've studied 1029 items at IKnow!. As another learner of Japanese to another, I wish to try and point something out. To me, eigo no setsumei suru (written on page one) would seem wrong. I just spotted it upon passing your journal. Personally if using 説明 I would use 英語で説明する。Or to make simpler, 英語訳（English Version) or possibly 英訳。(English Translation). Just trying to help a fellow learner of Japanese.

Hi sunja, how long have you been learning Japanese now and do you have anything in particular that you would recomend for progression through the language?

Kupo, thanks for the tips! I've been meaning to get a book on particles. That will have to go on my X-mas wish list!
First Japanese: I never got very far with Japanese when I lived in California. I didn't start actively studying it until about four years ago. I say that to my shame because It's taken me that long to reach a decent intermediate level. My path for learning Japanese would not be the one to follow. I had some archaic kana-only textbooks that I was learning from and was able to speak "Mr. Tanaka is not here, would you like his voice mail?" before I could say things like "I'm hungry". Obviously not the best method! The past years have been rather frustrating. My whole log is going to look like one big plug for IKnow!.com, but vocabulary learning with this website has really helped me to push forward! Listening -- by using their Dictation program Kanji -- helping to tie kanji to the kana that I already learned vocabulary -- enabling me to finally read more The sentences for the vocabulary are the best thing. I don't have to come up with any on my own. They're concise, descriptive and come with pictures. I'm not comfortable with my Japanese to speak it. I'm looking forward to taking trips to Frankfurt in the future to try to find some Japanese speakers. I prefer this to the online learning, but who knows, I may change my mind. There's still time to improve. As for German: I started learning German on my own before Internet and had only lame library tourist books to get me to Goethe Institute's beginner level. After a year I traveled from L.A. to Claremont with the train to take Goethe Institute's test for "tourist-level German". Then I moved to Germany. If somebody were to ask, I learned German through hard knocks. I watched a lot of television, I met people and went out a lot. There were many years in which I lived in blissful ignorance of what was being said around me. My zealous attitude kept me learning and it took about 5-7 years (can't exactly pinpoint when "fluency" happened) but I'm about as comfortable as you can get with a language ;-) Of course, there's always room for learning! I will say this: HOW I learn languages, specifically Japanese, didn't improve until I found this forum. If you don't mind I have some suggestions:
ベイト ⇒ バイト or 仕事 if you're not a student レーベル ⇒ レベル 。。。 ⇒ … 母から荷 物が来た ⇒ 母の荷物が届いた 短所美 ⇒ 誕生日 ベド ⇒ ベッド 雪がやめた ⇒ 雪が止んだ（やんだ） 雪をかききなければならない ⇒ 雪をかかなければならない but an alternative phrasing would be to use the noun: 雪掻きをしなけらばならない バタ ⇒ バター こ ⇒ 小麦粉 アマンド ⇒ アーモンド？ 言葉が習うができたことです ⇒ 言葉を習うことができました。 ポヅカスト ⇒ ポッドキャスト A lot of corrections, but I have to say that your written Japanese feels quite natural on the whole. "beito" - what about part-timers? :) I use that word anyway, "Arbeit" -- the German word for "work" -- but I assume "beito" refers to part-time or student work. Is this correct?
Thanks for your time! Hmmm, I think I'll reserve my writing for the weekend. I have more time then. I don't want to start logging my daily activity until the end of the month. バイト(Baito) means part-time work, yes. 仕事just means general work, the word which most adults would use. Hope that helps :) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

For adult part-time workers you use パート, バイト does not mean the same thing as Arbeit. It is used for students working extra or for young people that haven't worked for real. 1 person has voted this message useful |
