I wrote my response this evening. Being the last day of school, today was completely full and I didn't get a change to do any kind of study. I was having a hard time forming my own sentences while writing the mail (I'm pretty exhausted.) I kept flipping through books and pages on the Internet for something good to say....*yaaaawn* tomorrow will be more productive.

I got a message from one of my other penpals. She was very thorough with her explanations. (Great!)
I'd written「その都庁は見物する 値があったそ� �です。」 and it should have read "aru". The reason she says, あったは過去のことをあらわします。Don't use a past form when you mean the present. Got it. Isn't that great? I get it explained to me in Japanese. I wrote something with "a lot of" when I should've written "big". 多いは英語でmany, much, a lot ofを意味します。bigは大きいになります。 This is what I wrote back: She wrote,「Are there any places you have an interest in Tokyo?」 私は東京をよく知りません。自習で日本語の 勉強うするようにしています。私にとって、 漢字を読み方について難しいし、練習しなけ ればなりません。 日本語勉強する始めてか ら、５年が過ぎました。始めはぜんぜん読め ませんでしたが、最近はインタネットの日本 ウィキで読めるようになりました。私は毎日 練習したら、だんだん楽しめるようになりま した。東京のことについて、英語で読むこと が出来るでしょうね。でも、日本語で読んだ のほうが楽しいと思います! I always feel I have to check everything over. I always start out by writing something that's too complicated, or something that's beyond my abiltiy to write yet. I usually have to write each sentence a few times and hone it down to a more simpler version (one that's less likely to be counted as wrong.) It'll get better. I'm writing every day so.... I have to get off the computer for a while. My "thinking" in Japanese is not working out at all. I want to start dictating from teh old "Yookoso!" intermediate tapes again. The dialogues are perfect for basic conversation. I don't have the script, but dictating will make me pay attention to what's said. I just had a text chat session with one of my correspondants. I think it was pretty successful. Tomorrow will continue. I tell you Internet is so great. All three forms, email, text chat, voice chat are available. I'm slowly beginning to see the advantages and disadvantages of each.
Text chat: it moves fast so there's not much time to react or make any revisions. The flow of the conversation is a point of focus and that makes it hard to concentrate on getting the syntax right. If there's a delay the timing is lost because most likely the other person will have stopped waiting for a response and will have entered in something else. Perhaps the most challenging aspect, there's no time to look up any words, so you're forced to ask. I ended up putting a "tte" on the end of whatever was in question and then wrote in English (in quotes) what I thought he meant. Then of course a pile of question marks. That worked the fastest. That way I was able to make sure I understood before writing a response. Emails: The advantage with emails is everything you can't achieve with text chat, that is, look up words, craft better sentences, practice using vocabulary. I can start writing about a particular theme and all the words concerned with that theme I can practice using. You're not forced to respond, though. There's not really a "conversation" it's just writing practice. I've got plently of that. Most of my corresponents only want email right now. What I like about it is I get a chance to work on grammar usage. The grammar that I use in text chat I can practice in an email first. Voice chat: I have yet to try... today I've done nothing but text chat and email-writing and my family is beginning to wonder where I am.
I'll try to make this entry brief-- thank goodness I'm a fast typer.. *whew* I had a long text chat session this morning and it was a bit discouraging. I --stink-- at text chat. At least my partner could follow what I wanted to say. I made mistakes left and right. I need practice. My email writing looks okay but this spontaneous writing is...well, that's where I need to concentrate. I'm going to go practice my dialogue tapes now. I've got to learn how to do these emails faster. They're taking too much time. I wrote one this morning and it took me over an hour! It's almost 1:00! I spend a lot of time on the English corrections then I have to craft something in Japanese. I used some of what I learned yesterday during my text chat. I don't plan on chatting any more until the weekend, because I really want to spend more time studying these dialogue tapes. yookoso!. They are full of every day basic speech and all basic grammar is covered. If I can master everything on those four tapes I think I'll be in good shape. I really want to do that before my next chat session!
I had fun writing to my penpal. She's a bit envious of Germany's generous vacation time. I have to admit it's pretty sweet. I wrote to her about what there is of Japanese culture in my area -- virtually nil. I sent her a picture of "Costa frozen sushi" just for laughs. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Got my corrections back. I missed the correct term for "frozen sushi". Apparently it's really easy -- kootta sushi. I tried just putting the "koo" on there, thinking it was a compound or something...
My biggest problem seems to be adding the "watashi" too much. I made an extra effort to leave it out of my email messages today.. Look what Mariko did for me, she explained it all in Japanese スーザンさんは、“私”を頻繁に使う傾向に あります。 間違いではありませんが、主語を抜いても意 味の通じる時など、“私”を抜いてみるとよ り自然な文章になると思いますので、試して みて！！ I really like "tame shite mite" "go ahead and try it". -- what a useful phrase.. I have two other emails that I've gotten back that I haven't reviewed yet. I just finished writing Mariko's reply and I'm off to write two more replies. I've updated my first TAC page with my "USE IT OR LOSE IT" summer plan. As for my next Benchmarktest I think I will include my next major Japanese text. I'm just sitting down to write it now. I should have it here within the next couple of days. (There will be corrections from my Japanese penpal, of course, so that will be a good measure of what I've achieved thus far.)
