There's one thing that site didn't cover that I've found so far and that's the "ta form" + まま to express "without"

other than that it's an excellent little review. My penpals are all quiet. I may have scared one of them away by going overboard on the English grammar corrections. Sometimes I get carried away when talking about the English Present Perfect. The others are probably working. I forget -- no summer break in Japan. I have off. The only thing I have today is my 3-year-old's preschool checkup. Let's seee. I think I'll get out of the forum -- a must if I'm going to learn anything -- and go dictate some more from my cassette tapes.

I'll try to think of some more stuff to write. I may also have to add another penpal if I want to continue writing every day. My current 3-5 penpals may not be able to handle the demand of me writing to them on such a frenquent basis... Actually I'm probably thinking about it too much (kangaetsugi). If they don't have the time they don't write.

I had about ten minutes to do some dictation. Other than that I've been monitoring "summer fun" out in the garden with some of the kids from the neighborhood...

This is about some guy's winter plans. The grammar focus is on tsumori and to omou

I wanted to review the kanji so that's why I put it here.. I only dictate in kana. I'm a little curious about the shi o to omoimasu. I understand for example, iku to omoimasu means I think someone else will go and ikou to omoimasu means I think I will... But I can't find "shi o to omoimasu" but I assume it means "I think I'll do..."

EDIT: oh I forgot. This "garbage problem". That happens here a lot. Okay I'll copy the whole thing to another file...

No emails this morning. I made inquiries to two more Japanese people to see if they want to exchange emails. I want to write more and the partners that I have are starting to slow down. I'll be studying all day. It's raining again.

I may go to Sharedlangugage.com -- I think that's what it's called. I want to try to find an extra text chat partner. I was in the middle of trying to register last night when I got a unsolicited skype call from a dude who's been following my posts here in the forum. (He wasn't interested in language let anlone Japanese.. ) I changed my Skype set-up and removed my Skype address from my profile. That ought to do it....

Wow. I just finished half an hour of text chat in Japanese. I followed the awesome tip from Cavebear and went to SharedTalk.com. I got a text chat partner right away! The only reason why I'm not there right now is I had to break for breakfast.

I'm going back. Awesome. I don't even have to go through Skype and there's one-on-one or group chat. I didn't have to do anything. I got a pop-up box from someone asking for a chat -- in Japanese!

What fast results. I'm so impressed. Things I learned,

"iku kamo shiremasen" is better than "iku deshou" for saying "I'll probably go to..."

"me ga samasu" is "to wake up" and not "me ga hiku" which is "to open your eyes".

okay I'm off..

I just spent some more time at SharedTalk. It wasn't as great as the first chat. I got locked in with someone who didn't know much Japanese at all. He was interested in German and I spent most of the time speaking German...and he wasn't any good at it - oh well ;) That's the way chat goes.

I got into the group chat room. Boy, that wasn't for me. I got buried. Half of it is English anyway. The other times I couldn't process the Japanese quick enough and I couldn't keep up...

Then I found another Japanese but I spent most of the time speaking in English before he had to go..oh, they say I think that's it for "part-time". I'll check it.

I'm going to go practice topics to chat about. I've learned that my J. text chat partners only have about 5 (one guy) and 9 (another) days off during the summer. I have more time to prepare my Japanese than they have for their English (lol).

I'd better go study up so I can maximize my chat time better.

I had my last chat around 2:00. I have some time now but all the language partners that I want are asleep.

As it turns out I won't be here for all of my "USE IT OR LOSE" it summer break after all. I have a guest coming and as it stands we're planning a trip to Paris next week. HA. I shouldn't have abandoned my French Assimil!

BENCHMARK 3

It's Saturday and one of my Japanese penpals sent me some corrections back. This isn't the writing that I was thinking about for my "Benchmark 3" but I think it will do... I made enough mistakes here ;)

correct!

I wanted to say "free time + becoming more" and tried "you ni naru" and she wrote something simpler using "hima ga dekimasu"

Tried to use "rain and wind" but apparently the whole thing about the wind is understood because she took it out and wrote "a lot of rain" instead. And why did I put myself (subj.) bet the adjective 汚れた and 窓? who knows... Then I should've used the past negative form of the verb instead of the present...ok...

*今夏には雨量が多い。たくさん雨が降って 、外へ出にくいです。--)   今年の 夏は雨が多いです。たくさん雨が降っ &nb sp; ているので、外へ出にくいです。  &n b sp;

There's not a word for "this summer"? oh well. I tried being creative with 今夏 and she wrote 今年の夏. Then I tried to use "large rainfall" and she just wrote "a lot of rain". Then she wrote "no de". Apparently that's clearer than the verb + connecting "te" form that I used.

日本の雨期はいつですか?--) 雨期and雨季are same meanigs but 雨期mean about span 雨季mean about seasons. In Japan, the rainy season is June and July.

There's her vocab explanation..I'll have to go consult the dictionary because I've forgotten how to sound out all those rain words..

And here's my last text chat. This is the most productive text chat I've had to date. ( -- that includes all the attempts at SharedTalk.com that I made yesterday..). I made so many glaring mistakes (lol) I learned SO MUCH from ONE SESSION.

I have my work cut out for me today. I have three emails to write to my Japanese penpals -- plus -- I have three messages from Japanese at SharedTalk.com that I haven't even opened yet.

I'd like to tackle SharedTalk first, since it's still relatively early and I think I can catch more chat partners that way.
