I could use a little help here..
I have these "textbook japanese" tapes without the text. I use them strictly for listening. These are short dialogs that I use to do dictation. I like to freshen up my listening skills this way. There's a couple of spots that are troubling me. I thought I could put what I have here and see if anyone can enlighten me... 明日のハイキングに行く人はいますか Is there anyone going hiking tomorrow? はい、川村さんと私です。 yes, kawamurasan and I. ハイキングに行く人のミ--チングが一時にあ ��ます。There's a meeting at 1:00 for all those who are going. ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- for this one I didn't catch the first sentence, but it's asking about hobbies) 外国語勉強することです。Studying a foreign language (as a hobby). いくつぐらい勉強しましたか ----) now here I don't know if they're asking how many units they've studied?? "ikutsu??" 30ぐらいです。 今まで勉強した外国語で一番難しい言葉は何 ですか up to this point what's the most difficult foreign word you've studied? ------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --------------- 山田さんの娘さんはおいくつですか。yamadasan , how old is your daughter? 先月六歳なりました。 turned 6 as of last month もうそんなにおきくなったんですか not sure of this...something like "gotten that old already?" ええ、いつの間にか。what's this expression? Something like "yeah, you don't notice (how time flies)"?? ・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・ ・・・・・・・・・・・・ ペ--タさんのにさんの仕事は何ですか "nisan"? Does this make sense to anyone? They're asking what Peter has become --for an occupation-- but I don't know "nisan".. 画家です。 A painter. 本当ですか。 Really? ええ、絵を書くのが大好きで画家になったん です。 Yes, He liked painting/drawing pictures so he became a painter. Today is Dictation Day! woo-hoo!
Ever since I got home I've been writing down everything I can make out in Japanese. I did 40 minutes of dictation with IKnow! and now I've been going over the Yookoso! tapes again. I can't write kanji, I can only write in kana/romanji. I'll put it in here so I can see the kanji and I can get corrections if someone happens to see something I missed ;-) This part of the tape is asking about past-time, hobbies, etc. みどりさんの臭味は何ですか。 ふ--ん、特に何もないんです。 でも、週末よく映画に行きますけど。 僕も映画は大好きです。オペラ矢の怪人やカ ツも見ましたか。 いいえ、どちらもまだです。 じゃ、今週の週末どちらか見に行きませんか 。 いいですね。どちらがいいですか。 僕はどちらでもいいです。いつ行きましょう か。 私はいつでもいいんです。 じゃ、金曜日の夜はどうですか。 いいですね。 どこで会いましょうか。 どこでもいいんですが。。。。 all this indecisiveness got a little boring for me..so I fast forwarded to a teacher asking her students about their hobbies, specifically sport. みんなさん! みんなさんはどんな臭味があ � �� �ますか。えっと、コロナド(Coronado?)さん、 �� なたの臭味は何ですか。 僕はスポ・ツは何でも好きなんですが。サッ カ・が一番得意です。 そうですか。 スコット(Scott)さんどうですか。 僕もスポ--ツも大好きです。スキ--が一番好 � �すが、あまり上手じゃいません。クラウス �� �んのほうが上手です。 クラウスさん、本当ですか。 ままです。僕はくにでよくスキ--をしました ��ら、でも、水泳をねがてですよ。スコッ ト� ��んのほうがずっと上手です。。。。 They go on like this for a while...fast-forwardig now to someone who doesn't want to swim at all... 水泳はぜんぜんできません。。。ええ、私は 寒い町の主審ですから、ほとんど泳ぐなかっ たんです。 not quite sure what "shuushin" or "shusin" is. I think this says that the location they have for swimming is too cold and therefore can hardly swim at all. I think it's "oyogunakattandesu". I hope I caught it right. That's all I have for the moment. In case I heard something wrong or misspelled a word, corrections welcome! EDIT: sorry about the garbage. EDIT (again): Here's what I got accomplished. I tried to keep the earplugs on most of the day, listening to various things. I can't give specific times when I did dictation because so often I have these verflixten interruptions. I went ahead and started Levels 7,8 -- as if I don't already have enough to do. The thing is, there aren't any more new words coming out of Levels 5,6. I've been through all of them and now it's just review until I finish. I'm over half way there. I have 7,8 set for "slow" so I don't have to do but 2 lessons a day in each. 8時から8半までヂクテッションをしました。
イヤホ--ンで日本語のテ--プを来た。 9半に髪を切りました。漢字のフラッシュカ-- ド を持っていましたから、ヘアスタイリストは 私に日本語について聞きました｡がいこくご の習うことが出来ないといっていました。で も、歌うことが出来た、習うよ。 okay, this is a very simplified version of our conversation. I'm working with "she said" ~toitteimasu. Here's the translation: From 8:00 until 8:30 I did Dictation (I'll have to go into the Japanese language mode at IKnow! to see how you write or translate "dictation", but for now I think what I wrote will do.) I listened to Japanese tapes with the earphones. At 9:30 I got my hair cut. I had my kanji flashcards with me and so the hairstylist asked me about Japanese. She said she couldn't learn a foreign language. (I said) If you can sing, you can learn (a language). I'm not sure if "utaeba" would be better. "utaeba, gaikokugo o narimasuyo." would be an alternative, although I don't know about using "narau" as a verb for learning a language. Maybe "benkyou suru" would be better. I know there's this conditional "ba/kereba" form which may work better than "kotogadekiru" (able to). I think that the later is used more in speaking. I'm also more familiar with it. Suggestions please! I'll be back in to edit later... EDIT: I think I'll be finished with Levels 5&6 before the 24th. Once those words start getting checked off as "known" then it only takes me a few minutes to complete the lesson. That will leave me with Levels 7 and 8, which I'd like to have finished this time next month. I'm moving faster than I'd planned. They recommend a learning period of one month but I tend to get bored when the new words stop coming. Fast doesn't bother me. I figure I can always review with extra Dictation or Brain Speed. I switched the language over to Japanese -- don't know why I didn't do that before -- that makes it all the more fun. I've been studying since 8:00 this morning and I just finished my 1000th sentence at IKnow!. Even my automatic, congratulatory message from IKnow! is something I can learn from, "1000th 例文を学習完了です" I understand what it says, "you just completed your 1000th sentence". The right side of the kanji is the same as "bunshou", but the other kanji are a mystery. I only know Heisig: "study", "learn", "perfect", "complete". I'll find out eventually!
Found it. 例文 : れいぶん : sentence 学習 : がくしゅう : tutorial, learning 完了 : かんりょう : completion Here's what I've been developing so far; Dictation This really helps my listening skills. After doing 1000 sentences I've already noticed an improvement in my comprehension. I go back and listen to my old JFBP materials and they speak really fast, normal for a native actually, but faster than IKnow! and I have no problem understanding everything that's said. Recording sentences/shadowing them This helps with my listening to a lesser degree, but it really helps with pronunciation and syntax. I think the transition to speaking will come easier by doing this. I've been a big follower of shadowing ever since I read about it in the forum. It fits in well with my "don't-have-time-to-study" schedule. I put the earplugs in and go. Problem area: reading! When I do dictation with IKnow! The format is kana only! This is a real drag in some ways because I can't see the words as I would, reading them in a newspaper. My reading ability remains at a deficit. How do I correct this. Well. I have a plan and I don't know if it will work. We'll try it today. I plan to go back to the sentences I just worked on and write them on the computer. The computer supplies the kanji. I copy the kanji onto a separate list. I have two separate pages in front of me; kana sentences and page with the matching kanji. I match the kanji from the list with the kana words from the sentences. It forces me to really look. That way I won't just breeze over the words the way I do when I read from the computer. Problem: this will take time. And I'm supposed to do this for every sentence that I write? We're supposed to decorate the tree today and go to the year-end Veranstaltung of our kids' sports club at 3.00. I'd better get to it. One thing I have to remember is to write the kanji in a partial context like "brush teeth", "write words", "run a fever". EDIT: Well, it worked for today but I can't make this a regular practice. Looks so studious when I read about my little above plan but making it a part of my routine is something else. There are alternatives. typing my dictated kana sentences back to the computer accomplishes a second look at the kanji and it doesn't take as much time as writing 50 kanji by hand (the number I covered today). Some of these guys get pretty complicated. So, no. No writing kanji over and over again. I'll come up with an idea for exposure that works. It has to be more efficient than reading. With reading I come across even more unknowns and the chance of me coming across more than one of my vocab words is not so good. My own sentences? Probability for error is great. I came back and decided to rewrite my log entry.
I have pages and pages of kanji and sentences that have been accumulating on my desk. I count 11 here. The only way that I can review is if I dictate the meanings into the dictation recorder. There's usually plenty aids I've used in the past to trigger my memory (the work I did with Heisig). This is the only way, otherwise the pages just sit here. I can't be here much longer on the computer so let me put in the words I missed from doing my review with Brain Speed, Level 4. Brain Speed is kana only so maybe a quick look at the kanji will bring the meaning back. 教授 - professor 貿易 - trade, commerce 努力 - endeavor, effort 効果 - effect, result 状況 - state of affairs, conditions 主張 - insistence, assertion ugh. I can hardly read the kanji. I'll quick copy to a Word doc and blow up the font size. Muuuuuch better. So the dictation/tapes are working better than me studying from a hard copy. I try to throw in downloads of stories like Peter Rabbit or Peach Boy to keep me on my toes. I think I'll skip the E-Kanji website that I found last night while searching for dictionaries. I have more than enough to work with today. I won't bother logging my IKnow! progress until I'm finished with 5,6. Once that happens I'll be doing mostly review until the New Year. (That's 1200 words from Levels 1-6 which I've learned this fall!!). Gotta stay on top of those kanji.. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||||||||

"How many (languages) have you studied?"
"So far, which is the most difficult language among those you have studied?" 言葉 can mean language as well as word.
Both interpretions are correct.

Well. I'm currently reviewing and scrambling to get as much listening practice in before the New Year. Next week I won't be here. Here's the plan. It's review time. I just finished writing the 200 kanji from Level 3. It's become painfully clear that these multiple-choice vocabulary programs don't always work in the long-term. I've discovered that Brain Speed only works phonetically, that is, no kanji. I need to review the kanji on some of those words like "influence", "anticipation" and "solution". The kana I know. So in order to do this I've slowed down my aquisition of new words. I've quit Levels 7 and 8 for the time being. I'm about to start writing kanji from Level 4. I suppose I'll have to do the same for 5 and 6. JAPANESE BENCHMARKTEST 1: uhm, my listening comprehension stinks. I watched an interview last night on the Internet and I understand people talk faster on these talk shows but I still basically caught nothing. I couldn't even catch a hint of what they were talking about. Then I switched to a DVD -- an old one from Studio Ghibli that'd I watched a part of with my daughter and then packed it away. Happily I was able to catch quite a bit. Grammar is elusive. I even caught words I've been learning with IKnow!; "ambura", "kowasu", "mezurashii". Nikkei Weekly newspaper. The result: I recognized the word "milk" on one page (wow). And I started looking at one titled "kokoga kikitai" and within that read a title about an electricity manufacturer that read, "denki" + what's that word??...heisig... "manufactured in" plus "goods"??.... "sei" + "hin" or "bin", "kuwashikunainodesga" .....If I encrypted the whole article it would take me over an hour. So there you have it. That's why I need to stop writing in my log and review those kanji! My mom's coming next week on the 23rd --- so much to do before Christmas!
