get my Spanish to a more advanced level. i'm not sure what this consists of, but i know i want to be able to watch tv and understand what i'm hearing, and to read books at intermediate levels (such as harry potter, eragon, etc.) without needing much use of a dictionary. also, after i'm comfortable with my Spanish, i'd like to dive seriously into another language. I'm thinking either Italian or norwegian. Italian would be easy because of the Spanish fresh in my mind, and norwegian should be easy because i'm a native English speaker. I'm probably going to go for norwegian, because after Spanish, i'll probably want to leave romance languages alone for a little bit. I'm thinking about a half a year for each goal; getting my Spanish better and getting to an intermediate level in probably norwegian. wish me luck people.

Not for the whole year, but current priorities are: Korean fluency, Spanish and Polish high intermediate/strong conversational. SHould take most of the year overall, but you never know.

Spanish - Advanced Fluency by late Spring (I think I'm actually already there passively, my new challenge is going to be bringing it to a nice level of active fluency).

French - Maybe the beginnings of Basic Fluency by the end of the year (doubtful, seeing as how I'm always putting off studying French for one reason or another).

I might also start taking German classes in college (I figure I could kind of keep it on the back burner, only taking classes, for about two years, like I did with Spanish, and then start studying it on my own once I've brought my French up to par with my Spanish).

I want to be able to read all Asterix albums I have or will buy in the next couple of months. That includes many IE/European languages, and at least Turkish, Indonesian, Hungarian, Vietnamese, Estonian and various Finnish dialects. I know of course beforehand what's being said, but I want to be able to at least analyse sentences and make a good guess at what the individual words mean. I also have some comic books in three different Sami languages, and I'd like to do the same with those. I'd like to read some books at intermediate level in Spanish, German, Czech and Polish too.

After I've done that, I'd like to use the rest of my spare time to paint my house, fix my cars, go on vacation with my family, go for some long walks, do some work for a couple of NGO's, work on some web sites, play the piano a lot, build a guitar and mow the lawn.

I have written a long status report in my profile thread a few days ago, so this will just be a brief summary.

Basically I didn't achieve as much in Russian in 2008 as I had expected, so conquering that language that will be my prime goal for 2009. One of the reasons for this is that I spent more time than expected on the Germanic languages, in particular on Dutch and Icelandic, but at the end of the year I also took up Afrikaans, and I have even been rebrushing my stagnant Low German by reading books bought in Hamburg and Flensburg. I have also to some extent activated my Swedish (in which I already had rather good passive skills) so all in all 2008 became a year dominated by the Germanic languages and not the Slavic ones as expected.

My Modern Greek also became good enough for practical uses, such as reading books and articles on the internet. The big surprise was that my dormant Latin also 'woke up', sparked by my somewhat accidental find of a Modern Latin newspaper on the internet (Ephermeris). And then I have decided to spend some time on learning Esperanto.

All that leaves me with a bunch of languages that need regular attention, and doing that will be my second most important assignment for 2009.

My new year's resolution for language is to become proficient in these following languages I've chosen:

Georgian
Estonian
Lithuanian
Icelandic

I plan to study each of these languages intensively for 3 months. I will study hard to attain my goal.
