I see you are studying Dutch. Someone earlier suggested Max Havelaar by Multatuli (Eduard Douwes Dekker). It is a major work in Dutch literature, written in 1860. There are lots of good resources available on the Internet, including the complete good quality audio book at LibriVox http://librivox.org/max-havelaar-of-de-koffij-veilingen-der- nederlandsche-handel-maatschappij/ The modern spelling version of the text (which matches the audio) is at: http://nl.wikisource.org/wiki/Max_Havelaar The parallel English version is at: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Max_Havelaar_(Wikisource)/01 There are good Wikipedia articles and lots of other resources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Havelaar I have started to read it in parallel, and to listen to the audio. Excellent parallel among NL, EN and audio. A Dutch friend said he found it a bit boring. It is 1860's literature but with the modern spelling, it is quite good. That being said, I'm not sure how it can be read and discussed as a book club book. But I am open to suggestions. That probably would help my motivation to continue reading it. Suggestions? I would love to have a book for Spanish or Italian. I wouldn't mind reading "Il postino di Pablo Neruda" either if I can get my hands on the book. For Spanish how about "Doña Perfecta" by Benito Pérez Galdós? (Book Online | Wiki Page) The book seems to be about 167 pages of Spanish text with a long vocabulary word list after it. Or instead of that how about "Sangre y Arena" by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez? (Book Online | Wiki Page) This one seems to be about 220 pages of Spanish text. I didn't intend to work on my Dutch... but a version of the book with modern spelling, audiobook and English is too much to pass on. I will listen-read that book for April. :-) Since I have decided to read four books-of-the-month for April and I'm already done with March's selection, I will probably be starting early.
And I added "Sangre y Arena" and "Il postino di Pablo Neruda". Now we have quite a nice collection of languages for April, worthy of a language forum. Maybe in May we'll even have a non-European language feature. This is exciting! We would even have room for a non-fiction book of the month, but we don't have to have one. If anybody wants to suggest more books for more languages or future months, I'll add them as long as there are at least two people posting here that they will read them. So far, we always found more rather than less readers when the time arrived. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I would love to participate in a Russian one, provided the Russian text was short, but I'm not sure I can promise I would actually tag along once the time came. I'm swamped with reading for my classes and my essays (including War & Peace, which is a bit massive). However, I will participate in all book clubs for languages I know in June! :) A Scandinavian book club would be fun too.
