I have the french ones. I've reformatted the html slightly and cleaned up some of the more egregious transcription errors from the first two courses (didn't get around to reading the advanced course yet.)

hello all
new to the site

i'm getting towards the end of the beginners italian course and i also have taken the advanced German course. i have to say that i think MTs tapes and CDs are excellent.

having googled about i've seen quite afew negative reviews of the courses which surprised me. he has an accent, the students can be infuriating, there is no exposure to native aural comprehension and minimal vocabulary. these faults are minor or even irrelevant in my opinion though, as such aspects can easily be addressed upon ones own initiative, particularly given the rise of the internet. i feel that false classroom or textbook type surroundings are next to useless anyway for things like vocabulary and listening skills. real life situations and conversation or things that interest the individual are the only ways to learn such things for me. make friends and do whatever you can to hear and read the language as much as possible or if possible live in the country. i've managed to get italain and German tv in my house recently for example and it's brilliant. good grammar books are of course essential too.

i get the impression that most who end up disappointed expect to be fluent after a question of weeks. that is just a ridiculous level of expectation and i at no time felt mislead in what is promised. there is a lot missing but what do people expect after a few hours? MT addresses the important issues, namley the ability to grasp the structure and use it to form sentences and makes the most of the the time available leaving you able to use several tenses adeptly and confident enough to take risks in trying to find vocabulary.

there is a lot to do having completed the course but it gives excellent fundamentals and most importantly confidence. to think audiotapes can make you fluent in a language is absurd in my opinion, but if a good start is what you're after i think the courses are great.

I just tried the first few lessons from Michel Thomas. I had to turn it off because of the horrendous "beeping" when they want you to repeat. It gave me a headache and made me forget what he asked. What were they thinking with that atrocious beeping?
