His face to face language courses were $25,000US and lasted five days

Regardless of how good Michel Thomas was at teaching languages, US$5000 per day still sounds like an exhorbitant fee, irrespective of the learner's wealth. If I were spending that (wishful thinking!) then I'd better be pretty damned good after five days or I'd have some 'polite' words with the teacher.

He apparently had a money-back guarantee (it's on the website), that if you weren't completely satisfied/convinced this was the most effective way to learn on the market, you'd get a full refund, no questions asked. They promised comfortable proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing at the end of the five days.

I think a gifted language hobbyist could put together a language program similiar to Michel Thomas's.

It might not be as easy as it appears or else the market would be completely saturated with these types of programs.

On this, I agree. I've thought off and on about the possibility of creating an MT-type course to teach myself Portuguese, but I haven't put it into action yet. There aren't a ton of programs out there in this style simply because it's so unorthodox. It's tons easier to go with the Pimsleur or Learn in Your Car style, as you only need a native speaker, a script, and an English reader. There's very little thinking or trying involved. His method involved a rather patient teacher who'd come up with a coherent way of introducing the language in a way it could be learned and retained without paper or pencil, plus motivated students willing to sit with him and hack at it for hours. I wish some people would try to replicate it though; it's very effective. The closest I've heard to it is Behind the Wheel's material, but it isn't the same.

edit: however, I imagine three friends - two "learners" and a "teacher" fluent in X language - could try to mimic an MT course, with the "teacher" printing out a transcript of one of his courses, and saying everything MT said in English and in the target language. I would be interested in seeing how that turned out.

If anyone is interested in listening to this presentation I have ripped it to MP3, send me a Private message.

Michel Thomas's method was covered by US patents and copyright.
I think the CD is quite good but it must have been quite a different experience to train with him, because apparently he was masterful at calibrating to the individual students and knowing how to teach them. Not everyone will like the CD's because he is adapting to the students in the tape and one in particular is extremely dimwitted and this will frustrated and annoy a lot of people.

his $25,000 class also covered further classes in the future if you wanted to maintain your proficiency or brush up your skills ..

Its a good presentation , 140MB in 2 mp3

I have just spent six weeks transcribing all of Michel Thomas's courses; so perhaps some of you polyglots can read them and find lots of mistakes for me to correct.

Cadomniel, could you possibly upload those programs again? I didn't see the Sendspace links until today, and neither seems to work anymore.

However, I did find this by browsing through deleted links on MT's wikipage.

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6565358.html

It's an excellent overview of his teaching methods. It's the patent application they filed two years before his death.

Thanks for uploading that. I really liked hearing that presentation.

I was most amused by the teaching in "ghetto L.A." storey.

I might add that some new Michel Thomas courses are coming out. Information is available at Amazon.co.uk here and here.

The controversy over Michel Thomas' life is dealt with here. www.michelthomas.org/default.asp">link I tend to side with Thomas
over a reporter from the LA Times.

I bought a copy of a Michel Thomas basic course a few days ago, just so I
could sample it. I was actually impressed. His accent wasn't too distracting
and the students mistakes actually helped me in many ways. Of course it
isn't perfect but it might be the best way to quickly get a grasp on the
language. I am currently experimenting with my first Assimil course and I
can tell you I would have had a much easier time of it had I taken 8-12 days
to do the Michel Thomas courses first.
